A couple of years ago, I saw something like this with single leaves from a Kalanchoe. Suspending them with just the leaf base in water after a week or so a few roots formed and over the next month a large nodule of apparently undifferentiated callus tissue grew around them. New shoots then started from various spots on this nodule.

Not at all like the normal process of leaf propagation as the new shoots appeared only on this callus nodule and not attached to the parent leaf.

Geo, not sure why anyone would do that to a Kal. as they root so readily. Part of why I did this is that ZZ's take forever to root from single leaf (which I've done), so did this guessing it'd be fast & it was.

Thanks Sans2014, Ordinary conditions on a shelf above my kitchen table which is next to a west window, gets excellent light. Warmish kitchen conditions, my apmt tends to be overheated.

Nice! ZZ's are so much fun to propagate. seeing the tuber grow is really neat.

This is my pot of ZZ's! i think there are 4 maybe 5 plants in there and they all started as severed leaves i got more than 5 years ago now i think. Last time i repotted them the tubers where like gigantic potatoes haha. for the first two years or so they were just leaves :P almost magical

ZZ plants give me a hard time- I currently have 3, which I have kept alive for a few years, but generally they give me a hard time.

That's quite a pot full Nick, it / they look very happy w/ your care. How frequently do you water as yours looks so full? Then too you DID say you think it's 4 / 5 plants, so I guess that's why.

What kind of care are you giving them Sans2014? I basically ignore mine. The parent plant sits abt 6 ft. away across my narrow kitchen, NOT in direct light or sun, more subdued off to the side. Will try to take a pic of the parent plant over the wknd.

Thanks Karen! yeah there are about 4 tubers in there with a few leaves/ leaf stalks each. the early smaller leaves are also still on so it fills up the bottom layer nicely. I think i water every 2/2,5 weeks. and i fertilize once in a while with a double diluted fertilizer. it has always grown in south-west facing window (not in direct sunlight) since they were just severed leaves i think that has helped it.

Thx Nick, that's probably abt how often I water too, maybe twice a month. I don't fertilize much or often. I think I recently did as I just fertilized most of my plants given the arrival of Spring.

Here' s my original plant started from single leaf. I have forgotten how old this is.

I noticed one of the older stems has thickened up. This is the first time mine has done that. I believe it happens w/ age, the older, larger ones that one sees in the store have that.

A closer look in the lower right shows the tuber which has pushed itself up in the mix becoming visible, which it hadn't been when last repotted.

Sans, if you’re having trouble with the ZZ id suggest ignoring it. Mine don’t like to be babied.
