I'd say a bench with shoe storage, or some other type of shoe storage. perhaps a small bookshelf.

Try replacing the horizontal picture with something vertical. Maybe a mirror with a console table or a bench under it.

Not sure if this is located in your entryway or not, but you could build a mudroom bench there for storage. I'm focusing on the shoe storage aspect because you seem to want the space to be more functional than just having hung artwork. I think it looks great.

I would install good lighting and put a desk and chair in the area under the stair. Then I would put book shelves on the long wall. It would make a good study area.

Have you considered closing the space in making it a closet? A drawing showing the space dimensions would help with suggestions.

If you are just wanting to decorate I would think an upholstered bench with vertical artwork or console table would fill the space. If there is enough room even a nice upholstery chair with side table

this is front entryway hardly used.....we have mudroom at the other side where everyone comes in so this is purely decorative.

That area to the right of stairs and bannister is only 43"x 43".....an odd space to really do much with which is why I am at a loss

Since it is rarely used, would a custom storage room (for holiday decorations) help? It would be lovely to have a place dedicated to that, especially if you designed it with room to roll a faux Christmas tree in there without taking it apart.

A small table with a lampshade that gives an interesting design - a cut out design or crystal type that plays with light - could be in the dark corner and then a low decorative bench along the wall under the picture with an interesting print cushion. More about visual appeal here since it doesn't need a lot of utility.

It looks like the slant is painted a different color….maybe ceiling color? If so, paint it as the wall below it. I see one plus under the picture; easy to add one in the niche. Small table and small lamp take up the space. Put it the lamp on a timer. Something like this photo…but not that table or lamp...

This idea instead of the table and lamp…more specific. Small floor accent light behind a low table (a dark table to coordinate with the picture)…what is on this table is perfect for your space.

Is there an outlet for a lamp under the stairs. If so, a demi-lune cabinet or table with lamp, mirror and accessories. A half round tufted bench on long wall. Remove large art and relocate perhaps on stair walls up to second run.

You can add table, bookshelf, or artificial plants to the empty space. Below the painting you can add wall arts, mirrors, or a floating shelf.

Several of the comments would be reasonable for the space. Because of the height, you can’t stand in there, but you could have a custom cabinet for storage built into that area. The actual usable storage space could hold all the family’s luggage behind a two-door front. The luggage could be on a roll-out platform so you won’t bump your head when you need to retrieve it. I wish I had a dedicated storage place for our luggage.

Groveraxle....love that idea but there are so many closets in this house that are still empty. So, right now, decorating the space is where we want to go.

Get yourself a BIG decorative something for that spot. A big ginger jar, or stone dog, or basket with logs, or floor sculpture. But it has to be BIG, but not tall. Also, your horizontal picture looks weird. Go for either vertical or square to fit that wall. And depending on the BIG decorative whatever for the floor, you may not need a picture at all.
