I wish it were also in my garden since I have so few fragrant roses, and the scent of SdlM does not thrill me. Love the color too; I have too few roses in that shade.

oooh! I'd be thrilled also.

Ingrid, can you grow 'Mrs. B.R. Cant'? It's a tough rose, a shapely full pink, and sweet-scented. It has always struck me as having Bourbon-ish tendencies. I was reminded of it when I saw this photo.

Congratulations on your rose, Jeri! It's always a happy moment when a new variety flowers.

Wow! What a beautiful rose. I am hoping you will post more info about it as there is so little available. Can't wait to see what it will do in your garden. Love the color!

I can tell you now that it seems to have a lot of vigor -- willingness to grow. It's got a sturdy basal coming up, and I would not be at all surprised if it got to be as big as our "Ragged Robin." I rather hope it does!

And it's right on the other side of the stairs, so there should be a hefty blast of red in that location.

Congratulations! Vivid but not garish color. Ruffled petals remind me of petticoats.

Wow its gorgeous!

So far, I think the foliage is identical.

But, you know ... if it's 'Gloire de Margottin' -- well -- that would be a Ragged Robin X Unk seedling. (So, likely an open-pollinated seedling of RR, right?)

See: http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.21196
and look at the illustrations posted there.

So -- yeah ... a double form of RR is quite likely precisely what 'Gloire de Margottin' must have looked like.

If it IS, well, that wouldn't be the first "extinct" rose that Fred Boutin found in Sonora. 'Le Pactole' survived there, after all --- so why not 'Gloire de Margottin'?

We know that 'Gloire de Margottin' was available in CA in 1913 -- and by mail order, at that. The bloom I've seen is not a deeply vivid red -- but then, we've just had 90 deg. weather, and I'm getting pink blooms on Ragged Robin, so that doesn't bother me.

But, of course, there is no possible way to definitively ID this rose as either "a double "Ragged Robin"", or as 'Gloire de Margottin.'

Jeri, regarding the colour, I've noticed for old roses that what was called red back in the day might not be called that today. so maybe that's part of it. Just a thought.

You're right. In fact, there was no color called "pink" ... but illustrations show a darker red.
