I think that's salvia coccinea, which is an annual up there, but may reseed with vigor.

Salvia coccinea is an annual here that reseeds like he said lol. The bees and hummingbirds favor them over those yucky splendens. You get a bunch of free new plants every year!

I don't think you'd have a problem with reseeding in Vermont with your short growing season, and besides, the frozen ground would probably kill the seeds. These are sub-tropical plants. You can always get your son to save some seeds and send them to you every year.

Salvia coccinea seeds make it trough our 60 below winters and still come back like a plague in the spring. I've had them for decades.

C'mon, Jay. Chicago has never seen -60F unless you're talking wind chill which, of course, has no effect on seeds.

Well, why wouldn't wind chill have an effect? At least the temps it creates should! The coccinea seeds won't be affected by below freezing temps. Sorry for exagerating. We do get like 20 below. The Salvia coccinea will return faithfully every year if one doesn't let there garden get overrun by opportunistic thugs like weedy erigerons and partridge peas. Yes, for once I was forced to order new seeds lol! Thugas are ok, but they don't blow my socks off.....(???)

Not sure if you were serious, Jay, but wind chill is a measure of how quickly heat leaves a warm body and plants aren’t warm blooded.

Exactly, which is why they've started calling wind chill & heat index the "feels like" temperature. So you "feel" colder when there's a wind chill or hotter when there is more humidity in the air.
