Traumatized Parakeet

I got Ruffles abot 3 years ago and when i first got her she was playful. Then a family member accidentally let the dogs in and Ruffles got spooked and fell into the floor where the dogs attacked. I got Riffles out quickly and she suffered a broken leg (which has healed over about 2 years) but I also think that she might have suffered some mental trauma too. She is always scared to come out and play and is completely scared when out of her cage. What can I do for my best friend?

I’m sorry to say that we weren’t able to and had to make a makeshift stint for her leg. We may be able to soon but for now I am trying to coax her out of her cage every so often to get used to being out of it and i am extra careful to alert family members as to when I am doing this.

Is it correct that it took 2 years for the leg to heal? If it’s healed now, what would be the point of a vet trip?

I know nothing about parakeets so this is an off-the-wall suggestion. If she is healthy, how about getting her a friend, another parakeet?

She has good reason to be scared and traumatized. First, she may have been in pain for a long time if the leg took 2 years to heal. Did it rebreak? Broken legs should be healed in weeks so I don't understand the 2 years.

If the leg is in bad shape, then it's painful and she won't want to be handled or played with. If it appears that it has completely healed, it may not have healed correctly and is very uncomfortable for her. Until you see a vet, move her cage to a quiet area or at least cover the top and 3 sides of the cage so that she feels secure and has some peace and quiet. For now, the best you can do is just leave her alone and supply her with toys. Also make sure she can get around her cage without having to climb a lot. Flying within the cage will be easier than climbing. Does she have any problems perching?

Once she's healthy, consider getting her a friend. If you do decide to get another parakeet for her, don't put them together immediately. You'll need a second cage so they can be introduced gradually, otherwise there may be fighting since she would want to guard her territory.

If you don't want another bird, then continue interacting with her thru the cage but don't force her to come out. She can still be a good pet without ever being touched so enjoy her company now, and in time she may become more relaxed. But, she may never want to come out again, especially in the room where she nearly died.

it did heal in weeks, sorry for the miscommunication, she is just still scared. As I understand it, her leg is in good shape and she climbs around her cage alot. I will supply her with plenty of treats mirrors bells and other toys to make her feel at home and keep gradually opening the door and putting my hand in to see if she wants to perch on my finger. If she doesn’t i will play with her through the cage and such. I will usually play some calming music on my keyboard when she gets too scared. That usually calms her doen a bit.

Please see a vet before you do anything else! Poor birdie could be experiencing some lingering pain or trauma to the area that time isn’t going to heal. You really must rule out pain before you consider other “fixes,” and you shouldn’t consider getting a second bird until potential physical issues have been addressed.

"As I understand it, her leg is in good shape..." Who made that diagnosis, the milkman?

You need to take the poor bird to the Vet - as you shold have originally.

I hope your poor birdie is doing better.

I'll add that from experience with my bird, they seem to have amazing memories, so it wouldn't surprise me if Riffles is feeling a little post traumatic stress. Give her some time, but don't necessarily expect her to forget. She may not ever feel quite so comfortable, but hopefully you can earn her trust back in time.
