I have never,ever noticed an odor to any elastic, so I guess I can't help you.

There are actually several kinds of elastic. If you had bought swimwear elastic, is is a rubber based elastic which might have somewhat of an odor, but not overpowering. Other than that type, you could look for a sport elastic.

I don't buy elastics, but I have noticed some things coming in out of China, have an awful smell to them that won't come out no matter what. I bought a rug recently with a horrible smell that wouldn't wash or air out, so I returned it.

Might just be that batch. Maybe trying a different brand might help.

I haven't had a problem with elastic off-gassing; however, I'd try replacing with a latex free to see if that solves the issue you're having. Something like this: https://www.joann.com/plush-back-elastic-1-yd-white/6051619.html

I have been sewing for 58 years and have never had elastic that smelled! Very surprised by this. Is it old elastic? Replace it with new elastic that you smell first. That's the only idea I have for you.

We are alive and well! We don't check the forum every day, because life gets in the way, or for our most fun reason...we are sewing. :)

I have had two different elastics from two companies that stink soooo bad. 1) I was working w the person from the store and then she quit corresponding. I should NOT have had to do the following. I let the elastic sit out loosely for a long time with no change. I washed it, still stunk. Sprayed with Febreze and hung it up and it was almost gone. Then I hand washed it and I will use it now.

2) A different company. I bought two different elastics. One is bad, the second there is no way I will ever use it. I sent the company an email last night so hopefully I will hear this week. The horrible one was layed out for a few days, hung up very loosely for a couple more days with no change. I washed it with detergent and oxyclean and spread it out across my shower stall to dry. No difference. My hubby and I went to our bathroom a couple time and we could smell it 3 feet before we even got to the bathroom. It is now in an open cardboard box in my garage.

Please, if you could give me the names of companies where you have gotten odor free elastic I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm so glad this is being discussed! I've noticed that elastic smell for many years, and I can't wash it out. I can't tolerate fragrance, so I can't mask it. This was not a problem in the past, I think the quality of elastic has changed for the worse. I do contact the companies to let them know of the problem: perhaps they will purchase better elastic in the future. Thanks
