If you're okay with the maintenance then I would paint it a warm white. Mainly because the roof and brick are too close in color so it's very monotone. A few other curb appeal tips, lose the shutters (they're too small) and paint the front door a fun color.

Great point Sammie. That's my fear. Any suggestions for landscaping? That's not my strong suit. Admittedly, I'm a city girl who finds herself on 5 acres. Beyond mulch, I'm not sure what to do.

You do need a new landscaping plan.

If I were you, I'd hire a landscape designer to help you envision the space - and then do the planting yourself as time permits. That way, you'll be sure to have a vision for the part of the yard that you want to highlight, and you'll be sure to plant the right plants/trees in the right spots (sunny, shady, etc). Can't tell you how the $$ I've wasted on the learning curve...

Painting brick is a maintenance headache. I agree that a great landscape plan is the way to go.

Is your roof in good shape? If not, replace it with black roof then go great white with fun color front door. Then work on your landscaping. That’s a lot of property and looks pretty barren right now so you need a good master plan so you can do a portion at a time as funds allow.

I would not paint the brick which is a nice color. I would remove the shutters and get a wood door like the ones you like.

Landscaping is your answer. You can get some interesting plants, including small ornamental trees and evergreen and flowering bushes. Once they are establish need only hand pruning once every other year. Add perennials and bulbs planted in the fall. Make sure you allow space for them to grown. It is a good idea to have about a foot between the edge of the plant and the foundation. For season spanning color add a few colorful containers with annuals. You might want to plant some native trees that will grow to over 30 feet for shade.

Romabio lime wash and masonry paint look it up. You absolutely can and should cover that brick if you don’t like it! Unfortunately your inspiration photos (which I love) won’t work with your roof so you’ll have to go more of a cream white. Unless you can change your roof to black then I say go for the white white!

You say your house sits in the middle of a field. What it needs foremost is to be set in its setting; that is, some properly sited large trees some distance from the house and smaller trees and near the corners. Those trees should be in large, deep beds that then connect to smaller shrubs near the house.

You have a completely blank slate and could create something really gorgeous that would make painting the house completely unnecessary.

I am with Sammie J and Laceyvail. Landscaping is needed, and when the roof needs replacing, change it to a color that isn’t so close to the brick. I plain white house isn’t going to be more interesting than a plain tan house.

You all are awesome. Based on your comments I'm going to pivot and visit a large nursery near me. It never occurred to me to have a landscaper visit my home before painting the brick.

I think what may be putting you off the colour of your brick is the colour of your roof. When the time comes, replace it with a dark charcoal. Also, remove the dinky shutters on all your windows, they are way to small. I agree with everyone else that landscaping is what this house needs. Because you have 5 acres and a lot of empty space around your house, you can go big with your landscaping and plant trees that will grow big. If this were my house, I'd make the space in between the two wings of your house into a front courtyard with a small sitting area. Maybe add a pergola and lots of large pots of flowers that would make the front of your house really inviting.

To get suggestions here about landscaping, it ihelpful if you take photos to both the left and right of the photo first posted along with a little bit about goals, time, energy and interest in gardening. ddd’s sketch above is great and I love how it uses a wall or fence and landscaping away from the foundation to create a sitting area. But that isn’t useful if you live on a busy road or have no time for or Interest in gardening. So spend time thinking about how you might use your yard and look at a lot of photos or landscaping books to get some idea of what appeals to you. Maybe consult with a garden coach or landscape designer to get some direction or a design that you can implement as time and funds allow. Start with hardscape and utilities and then slow growing plants like trees.

Good plan. You want to have a "total" vision and then take baby steps to implement as funds allow. Let us know how that goes. Hold on to your wallet, landscaping is not inexpensive but so worth it!! It will completely upgrade your home and property.

IMO, painting the body and trim the same color (or close to it) is what brings "blah" to the look. Makes it look like per government contract. Examples which illustrate superior architecture, but break the rules, tend to look some kind of good anyway. Apply the same principles to lackluster architecture and it's not going to be pulled off with the same finesse.
