It never completely disappears in winter here. If yours didn't have evergreen overwintering foliage I suspect the worst.

That was my thought as well. I have never grown any type of strawberry that disappeared completely in winter - the hybrid garden fruiting types, F. vesca or F chiloensis all retain some foliage through the winter. Since F. virginiana is one of the parent species of the garden hybrid, I woud expect it to do the same.

Thanks for the info, floral_uk and gardengal48. I don't know why they would've died, but maybe they're just not a good fit for the climate of Northeast Georgia. Well, I'm not trying again. :)
