Kitchen Dead Space Design Advice

last modified: 7 years ago

Please help....we have a 5ft dead space at the end of our kitchen cabinets that needs a little TLC. Right now it is home to a horrible catch all desk that is on its way out. We don’t really have a need anymore of a desk in that spot.

I have attach a photo photo of the spot and a few more for reference in the comments

Thanks for you help.

    Coffee or wine bar?

Definitely a wine bar: fridge under a counter, upper glass cabinets for glasses, wine storage, bar accessories

I’d search for a beautiful hutch to fill the wall and provide storage.

We have a coffee area and wine/bar in other areas of our downstairs.

We like the idea of the hutch but will need to take the light switch into consideration

Not sure why these didn’t show up but here are a few pics of whats around the dead space

    Pet feeding area???

Love the painting! Do you mind sharing where you got it?

First things first: Give the silverware back to the giant. He's going to come looking for them, and he's going to be upset. And nobody needs that, do they?

    Then, a hutch.

Moving the switches is easy, but they are kind of low, so raise them in the process, if possible.

put a storage stool [with lid or drawers below] . don't you think it's okay to place your hat and purse there on occasion....or assemble your other things that you will grab and take with you....in other words...no desk, but a place that provides a bit of landing or sitting seems valid, at the same time it can be kept free of anything if you so desire. Seems with your finished kitchen you likely have all the dish storage you need. The hutch seems very much an "afterthought" and if you have the storage you wanted and planned for, I think it doesn't flatter your space at all. If you need dish/glass/serving ware storage, that's another thing......but go high end with the piece you place there.

You could save a few inches for the switches by changing to a double or triple rocker switch.

    Or even a quad switch:

If you are vegetarian that is perfect silverware to put in the gun rack in the back window of your pickup truck.

If you don't "need" anything functional there like a message board, storage or a coffee station, I'd find similar wall art to the one in the dining area. All your globes though...if that's a hint you travel, perhaps a map with pins of all the places you've visited? A conversation starter for sure.

those campaign desk looks so cool when redone. I've done about 6 of those.

If you remove all of the handles and take Bar Keepers friend to it w/fine steel wool, they'll look brand new.

similar one I did in a kelly green glossy enamel

two tone chest and polished hardware.

I added a custom white oak top to this Drexel Campaign, painted it a glossy gray, and a contrasting persimmon color on the inner drawers.

similar type, robins egg blue with coral inner drawers.

I know you said you don't need it anymore, but perhaps you could use it elsewhere? If you paint it the same blue as your chairs, hang a cork board, or shelving of some sort above, maybe it would work?

Hey there's Beth! with a cool idea - a pretty color for you, that'd complement the elements already there... what colors do you use... in art you could hang above it?

I wouldn't put a piece of furniture there - I think it will look squished in and out of place next to the white, matching cabinetry. And another place for the accumulation of more stuff. If you don't have pets (it is a perfect place for pet bowls or a pet bed), I'd put a tall decorative thing their - either a plant (or tall vase with pussy willows or something easy to care for), a sculpture, or a floor lamp. Something like this:

    or maybe this

I would ditch everything that's currently in that space and get a comfortable armchair. Put a big piece of artwork on the wall above the chair. I'd make it the kind of space where I would love to sit with a cookbook (or digital device), or where a friend or partner could sit luxury while I cook (even better, I sit there while he cooks!).

ETA: This suggestion is akin to the Scandinavian concept of a kitchen sofa.

I like Beth's idea. Paint the desk to match you teal chairs. Hang some art over it.

    long piece of wall art.

Lil S the wall art by the table was a home goods find from about 3 yrs ago. Sadly it has no markings or tags to indicate any more info about it

Dont plop another item in the space !! if you add anything have it made or ordered through the same manufacturer of the cabinets so it flows - because your granite ends with an overhang something tall may be required (notched to integrate the overhang or a fill) Depending on your storage situation it may be a nice broom closet or appliance closet.

Now that I see your dining area, I think painting the desk the color of your chairs in a glossy version would be beautiful and bring color to that wall. Is your chandelier copper? You could spray pain the metal hardware copper to blend. A bulletin board or nice tall piece of art on the wall (definitely get rid of spoon/fork). Perhaps organize the drawers for all the paper on top (or have catch-all tray that you go through twice a week)

I agree with deb. You have a beautiful kitchen - don’t clutter it with stuff.

If you NEED something there, continue the existing counter on over.

Think about what you need in the kitchen and that is waht you put there. You certainly don’t need another catch all space.

A pretty bar cart? I don't think the space actually needs anything but art maybe.

A bakers rack in a color that would coordinate with your dining area and/or the fringed floor mat/rug & you might still be able to access the switches
