What Succulents Do You Recommend?

Hello everyone!
I am fairly new in the succulent world and have only grown my succulents from cuttings, was given one, and am in the process of leaf propagation (wish me luck!). I want to go and buy some succulents but don’t know where to start. I wanted to know from you guys which succulents you think are must-haves and your favorites. Thank you so much!

Buy the plant that makes you smile.
That may be a rosette, or Jade. Tall or flat.
Maybe you like cacti, maybe smoothe plants.
Some are more colorful than others.
You should enjoy your plants.

Now if that sounds glib - it's because I am hesitant to tell you to get a specific type of plant. When someone says "get this plant" because it is easy and anyone can grow it - I take it with a grain of salt. What is easy for me to grow may not be easy in your growing conditions. And vice versa. And what I like may not be at all what you like.

I guess it depends on what you are planning. Indoors or outside? But I'll repeat - get the plant that makes you smile.

If planting outside and you want many blooms, look into some Ice Plant. They come in several colors and spread in nice mounds. I grow the purple one here in Virginia. Good luck!

I agree with Crenda. There is such a broad range of plants that are considered succulents. Some are grown for their flowers, some for their colors, some for their weird and wonderful shapes, some for a combination of of these attributes. What appeals to one person may not appeal to another.

See what you like, work at learning how to care for it, and just try your best. It's likely you'll succeed with some plants and struggle to grow others. We've all been there. It's just part of the learning process, and this process will continue as long as you're growing plants :-)

I'm going to get rid of my lawn and go over to Ca natives and succulents. I have had good luck going on Nextdoor and freecycle the last couple of years and getting all sorts of cuttings/plants/starts for free! Some people just left them on their porch in a box, but many were eager to talk plants and what worked best.

I've already planted my helstrip (the area between the street and the sidewalk) with succulents and I'm getting a lot of compliments on it! Next is losing the lawn and doing the big conversion!

I'm sorry I can't post pics with this lousy phone, but I'll take photos anyway for a before and after and progress of our conversion when I get a new phone soon.

I like the Sedum that gets tall. This one is Autumn Joy. The reason I like it so well is that it does not really look like a succulent to me.

I also like Echeveria because it is easy care and can be used for edging.

It is the bluish one.

If you intend to grow in pots then get whatever appeals to you.

If you want to put them in the ground then think what role you want them to have. For me, covering more ground is good so I have a lot of low spreading types.

The Autumn Joy I mentioned earlier is in a bed with other perennials. It is the only succulent in that bed.

Emmarene9, wow!!! Your succulents are so beautiful! The tall Sedum is beautiful and Echeveria succulents are amazing as well! I only have two small echeverias, so will definitely look for more and different types to add to my collection! Your yard is gorgeous by the way :)

Those pictures are not from my garden but that is about how they look. If they get water the Echeveria reproduce abundantly. I do buy succulents but many were given to me as cuttings or offspring.
