HELP! Deck splintering after a few months...

last modified: 7 years ago

Hi houzzers,

I am hoping you can help me. I will continue to search forums and online but in the meantime...we were undergoing a large renovation for 2 years. Our deck was installed last June. I expressed to my builder that I wanted Ipe wood for deck. He's been great in every other avenue and I guess I didn't scrutinize the bid carefully amongst all the other decisions...plus we were under a deadline...the wood specified ended up being a yellow mahogany balau deck. I should have seen that and argued. They let it acclimate for a month on site, presealed it and then sealed it again with cabot australian timber oil. At the end of last summer when it was brand new the surface started weathering and we sustained large occasional splinters. So they sanded it and resealed it. It's been through a winter (with snow, etc) and looks like hell. This doesn't seem like normal wear and tear. Now it's starting to splinter again. I plan on resealing it but I am wondering if this is normal? Is there a product we could apply that would help cut down on splintering? Thank you for your help.
