Not necessary, but of great benefit to the plant given that if they're planted per their current annular form, most of them are going to die anyway from rotting, and it give the plant more stimulus to grow new stabilization and feeder roots. It's the time of the year, too - those shoulder months need to be taken advantage of.

Rina, Tho' I've forgotten how long it took to root, I suspect it was a long time as the leaf was quite large, w/a thick triangular base where the root first appeared & then pupped. Somewhere I have a pic of the parent plant, w/ my size 8 shoe next to it for reference, biggest Gasteria I'd ever seen!

Thx Jeff, no, unfortunately not of the last repot, but a tag w/ its name G. distichia dated '06 tells me when I first started it. Likely it's been years 'cause I assumed it'd grow slowly & I just don't remember, bummer.

Sharon, I cut off the lower 1/2 of the roots so I didn't have a problem repotting; doesn't help the plant to just rewind the roots to put into a larger pot. I'm guessing that's what Jeff's comment meant about them rotting in their current form.

Jeff: shoulder months? Google suggests tourist context, pre-post peak season?

The shoulder months for succulent plants are spring and fall, when many plants do their best growing - it's not too hot, nor is it too cold.

Karen - Do you also remove any of the dead roots or old root bits at the base of your Gasteria? I usually do, but since the roots are brownish I find it sometimes hard to see what is dead vs alive.

Hi Mayo, I do when I see them, tho' I didn't see any under here. I judge it more by texture, if I find roots that are dried out, brittle &/or crunchy, I try to remove them.
