Garden rebuild still in progress

I’ve opened this forum many times since last fall to document my garden saga, but it was just too depressing. I’ve probably been clinically depressed most of the winter. In addition to the trees I lost in the hurricane, we had an ice storm that dropped 3 more trees in my garden and ten on DH’s goat fence.

The last of the tree stumps were pulled out of the garden by a LARGE bobcat and hauled off in a truck March 20.

Whereas before I had genteel tractor paths through my garden, I now have interstate highways plowed through it. Four major bed areas were destroyed. Hostas were starting to pip and I would be walking along and find unearthed hostas in a pile of rubble. Into a pot unlabeled it would go.

We have rebuilt and replanted two of the areas.

Amazingly I think I have only lost two hostas: Blue Sliver seems to be a dead crown, but i left it there in case of a miracle and Frisian Pride is on the missing list, although I have several small NOID’s that are yellow.

the good news is it’s been raining constantly and my sandy hillside garden loves that. I’m off to New Orleans again for three weeks so the garden can wait on me for a while. Thanks for identifying that weed for me.

your new beds look nice!..and not that new!..I know that you know the difference between before the storm and after but to me the hosta are big..the stones have a nice aged look..the garden has a woodland feel..it looks and feels established..

Oh Kathy I was concerned about that. The fact that you have so few casualties and have rebuilt two of the beds is a victory for you. You will make your garden beautiful again once you get home. Small comfort I know. Even more now I wish I could have joined you for Mardi Gras.

You are welcome for the ID. Just wish it had been something more desirable to you.

p.s. I finally got the immense hedge between the house and garden taken down in March. So different than your situation since it was a controlled and intentional take down.

it looks as if you've made lots of progress..have a great time in New Orleans!..maybe time away from your big garden rebuilding job is just what you need..after a break working on your garden could be satisfying again..as your plants grow while you're gone it could look pretty nice when you get home from your trip..I hope so!..

All those trees, what a mess. :-( I'm sorry to hear you've been depressed and hope your visit to New Orleans will help with that. I'm glad for the update because I've been wondering how things fared after the hurricane winds you had.... and then an ice storm? Ice is the worst!

We have high hopes for our gardens, but sometimes things are just out of our control. I hope your gardens will recover and that you'll never have another year like this last one! .....crossing my fingers that one of your yellows turns out to be the missing Frisian Pride.

Thanks for cheering me up, it’s helping! Here are the two beds that have been rebuilt.

The cute little yellow front left is Amalia. She was totally buried and stark white when we found her. The two green ones on the right front also took a direct hit from the big bobcat. I didn’t throw them on the driveway, I threw the driveway on them!

If I had a picture from this angle from last year there would have been four large pines in the pic. These are going to be very sunny beds this year. So it goes.

It definitely looks good! You should be very proud of yourself....we had one tree come down in fall and we’re still dealing With the after effects.

Anyone would just think you have a lovely garden. The fact that we know the back story makes the beds beyond impressive!
