Pls help my MIL

last modified: 7 years ago

My adorable MIL just picked up some vintage furniture: a cute yellow dresser and nightstand. She was going to have her son paint them white but I convinced her to leave them as is. I *think* she‘d be better off having her son paint her bedroom walls a pale duck egg blue. Is there anyone willing to photoshop a pale duck egg blue on her walls so she can see what it would look like? we would sure appreciate it.

The coffee table and exercise machine are not staying in the room.

I dont love that mirror above the dresser but idk if i can convince her to get rid if it. Maybe she thinks she should have a mirror above a dresser? but she has a big mirror in her bathroom so maybe i can convince her to replace it with a piece of art?

That's the Link-Bali Hai isn't it? I've done a similar one in a robins egg blue w/persimmon drawers.

the top is laminate so leave it alone.

These pieces looks so much better painted, especially in a glossy finish (that original yellow factory paint is ho-hum. Pinterest has a million examples of these painted)

this is more of a Haint Blue, but so much better than that yellow.

can't resist posting these colors. they're all so pretty

    wow

even the glossy white looks beautiful. don't forget the clean up the hardware w/bar keepers friend and steel wool.

Do the walls in one of these colors if going w/the white. bring in a chair w/a print in coordinating colors

I’d do grey. A true grey and not greige.

I did think gray at first but not sure she would like it as much as a soft blue. gray might be too modern for her.

Also i was noting how feminine her bedding is and i think it looks nice with the yellow furniture, so that led me to the duck egg blue....

Light blues are very restful and would look great with the yellow furniture. You could paint her mirror frame white.

Lovely furniture! It looks like painted bamboo, and bedding has a cherry blossom look to it, very nice together! White walls would be great too, with more colours taken from bedding used throughout the room, like this inspiration photo I found on houzz,

I also think painting the mirror frame to match the hardware on dresser, and turning it 90* would look better.

Is that the only place for the TV? Flat screens can be (relatively) inexpensive, and wall mounted where the cable enters the room would look better than having the cord snake around the room. The yellow furniture is lovely, and will look beautiful with the soft blue walls.

Like the posts of blue with yellow from above.

The mirror can be painted white. It could be hung a bit lower. Does there have to be a TV in the bed room?

The soft aquas look pretty with that strong yellow. I think the blue your suggested is strong for a bedroom, but that just my taste. She obviously loves that happy yellow dresser.

thanks everyone! I texted her a few of the pics you guys provided. I hope she likes them. I also dont love the tv on the dresser but who am i to judge, i need a tv in the bedroom too ha!

As far as wall mounting a larger tv, i agree that would look a ton better, but she is extremely frugal so i dont know if she will go for that :/

Agree something has to be done about the mirror but one step at a time, i dont want to bombard her, she will just get frustrated lol.

I like the dresser as is. It looks like there is yellow in her comforter. Have her turn the mirror the other way and lower it. I would paint the mirror frame but would depend on what color she goes with for the walls.

Blue walls can look very baby-boy's room when the color is too clear.

A story. I wanted a duck egg blue for my hall bath. I even had a picture and a chip that I took to my decorator. She winced visibly, and told me the color was far too intense. She suggested Farrow and Ball Skylight 205, which I argued was gray. I trusted her and have a lovely soft blue/green hall bath. The moral is to consider that chips look much less colorful than they will on the wall. Do a big board. I would suggest a blue gray, which will look plenty blue on the wall e.g. BM Silver Mist.

Every home should be a reflection of the person/people who live in the home.

Wall colors are more intense than they seem on a small chip because in an average 10x12 room with 8' ceilings we are looking at over 300 square feet of color. This is why we notice the undertones in neutrals so intensly. Tan is tan until you paint 100 sf of tan and suddenly it looks orange or yellow or pink.

I agree that you need to select a color that looks more subdued on the paint chip than what you want to see in the room, but that does not mean that we should never have rooms that have more intense color.

If your desire is to have a pastel blue, then pick one that is more subdued than you think you want. If you want a stronger blue, still pick one that is more subdued than you think you want, but there is nothing wrong with wanting a stronger blue.

I have seen stunning homes with great color that is far out of the mainstream neutrals and soft colors that most choose. You just have to make sure that the intensity is matched throughout the home and one room isn't standing alone.

My own home has far deeper and stronger colors than many. If I used Farrow and Ball Skylight 205 in my home it would stand alone. My neutral is also a mid level purple undertoned taupe that needs the strength of purples and teals and reds to keep it neutral.

My sister has a tudor style home decorated in fall colors. Her front room (Piano Room) is painted a deep burnt orange. Works fabulously with the rest of her home, but would stand out like a sore thumb in a home where everything else was light gray.

Can you imagine Farrow and Ball Skylight 205 in the room next to this master bedroom?

By the way - this color looks great with the yellow furniture!

If you MIL is not planning to change her bedding, that needs to be taken into account as well. The current bedspread colors are quite soft, and the cabinet itself is a soft yellow. As always, do a test on a large piece of board or cardboard to see how it looks.

To expand on Jennifer's example, to cover the walls of a 10x12 room with 8' ceilings you'd need over 50,000 of those little one inch sample paint chips!
