whats the purpose?

vinegar from the pickling aisle.. might be cheaper than ammonia in the cleaner aisle ....

Although I have lots of fun in the summer spraying the slugs I find with ammonia mIx, I want to see if spring drench will make a difference in the number of the slimy pest later in the season. So, I'm experimenting. Afraid to use vinegar even in small amt....my mother uses vinegar to kill weeds.( I know it's a different concentration) Thanks for trying to save me $$ Ken. Is cost the only reason to choose vinegar over ammonia?

you are correct.. its a year around job.. waiting until the population is out of control.. might not be the best decision ...

some peeps do the drench in fall ... to kill grandma ... in that vein ... you are killing momma .... and i hope you recall... they are ac/dc .... so momma is daddy.. etc ...

Copy that, Ken. Thanks for your help and for the laughs. I didn't get very far with the ammonia drench before I ran out. Will switch to vinegar....$ talks in my world too.

I've tried but have been unable to forget the zoological tidbit about slugs! explains why there are so many of them!

I buy giant jugs of ammonia from Menards and use a sprayer that hooks to a hose. It seems to go further. I‘ve drenched hostas several times a year in the past and it makes a huge difference. I’m about due to do it again. The hail last week did enough damage that nothing is super pretty anymore anyway, but the slugs need to die.

Since diluted vinegar is a mild herbicide and ammonia is a mild fert, I always opt for ammonia.

I just bought two 1/2 gallons of ammonia at the Dollar store for $1.05 each. Same aisle had vinegar for $1.70 each.

I'll check out our dollar store tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up on a bargain.

Can you give some details on dilution? I've never used ammonia drench but I did have a lot of slug damage last year so I might like to try. Especially if it's $1!

Popmama, I mix 1 part ammonia with 9 parts water and apply with tank sprayer. In the summer I hunt them with squirt bottle. Spell check has kicked into overdrive! It suggested 1 part ammunition! LOL

Thank you, Mae! I've never invested in a pump sprayer but I have used a hose-end type sprayer. Maybe I'll do some research on how to get that level of dilution with it. Lots to do!
