Dining Room Advice

Hi! I live in a 1920s bungalow. It’s pretty small as you can see almost everything from entering the front door. I’ve been trying to make the rooms flow. I’m having trouble with my dining room. Specifically, around the bar area. I feel like it is missing something. Should I do some type of accent molding under the bar? Rug or no rug? Any recommendations welcome!

Kelly can you take a picture of the room from another angle? I agree that the light fixture is large for the table. I think a round table may work better in that room. Also you could try putting a chair at each end.

The light fixture is a bit large. I had it installed and thought the same thing, and then got used to it haha. Definitely going for the rug! I had never considered a round table, but I think that is a great idea!

Oh! I think your dining room is about as perfect as they come. It needs nothing, in my opinion - not even a rug.

Since the sight line is open to the kitchen upon entry, I might consider Roman shades for your kitchen windows in a fabric color from the dining or living area. It'll provide continuity.

    Other than that, nicely done!

I agree with Manon. You've done a beautiful job of creating a very inviting space, and I wouldn't change a thing. Your chandelier is large but it works in an unexpected but delightful sort of way. (My dining chandy is overscale too and at first I thought we would replace it with something smaller but then got used to it, and now I love its slight quirkiness.) Ordinarily I am in favor of adding a rug to a dining room, but you don't even need that. Your space is quite nice as it is.

I like your light and don't think you need a dining room rug since you have a rug in the living area, and you walk through the dining area to get to the kitchen. The only thing I would do is put a large green plant on your kitchen bar countertop (where you have the small wooden bowl) to add some life and partially block the view of the refrigerator. You've done a nice job with all your artwork.

Thanks for all the recommendations! The plant is a great idea! I hate that you can see fridge and it is not built in. That’s a whole other project that needs to be tackled, eventually.

Nice job so far. The light fixture is fine and so is the table. You don't need a rug. I'd lower the light fixture to 30" above the table and get a centerpiece that is no more than 9" high.

Is the table not centered under the fixture?

It doesn't seem like you need a rug, and your light fixture looks great. Here are some of our dining room designs to show you what we mean:

The table was slightly off! I was moving things around cleaning earlier and didn’t notice :)

Beautiful designs! I ended up adding a plant on the bar, and it gives just the right splash of color I was looking for.

I particularly like the the furry addition! Gives the room a sense of luxury.

Good call centering the table and removing the high floral.

Very nice spaces! My only criticism is that the 3 pieces of artwork on that narrow strip of wall outside the dining room are a bit squished in that space. I would relocate them if possible.

I agree about the art.......although I 'd need to see that entire room for perspective.

I think your home is lovely. You did a great job in your decor, and in my opinion

it looks wonderful and it dosen’t need a rug. I like your table, Keep in mind that a round table would take up more room. I think your DR is a pass through for the other rooms,

thus, you need the extra room around the table area,

I do have a suggestion though if you don’t mind....wall up the bar area and on the left

side make a door way with an interior 36” french door. The door should open on the

kitchen side... It would give your home a classy look, and give you a blank wall ( where the

bar area is) where you could add more art work or a mirror or both. You would still

get light into the room with a lovely french door...
