Celestial Night disappointment

So instead of "deep plum purple", my Celestial Night is coming out pink. It was supposed to contrast the surrounding pinks, not fade in to them. I like the form so I'm keeping it, but I think I am going to switch Tropical Lightening there, at least that one I KNOW what it looks like, even if it is a stingy bloomer.

Carla - I just saw one in bloom at a local nursery yesterday, and it looked like yours - bloom form similar to Ebb Tide, but deep pink coloring. To my eye it didn't look purple at all, but maybe the color will deepen as the plant matures?

hmmm mine shows deeper color... planted 3 months ago. But I live in sf. The weather is cooler here. I love the form and color.

Hoang has this one and post it recently- and although it isn't purple, it is less pink than yours.

Maybe it needs time to mature?

We had a heat wave (for April) a couple of weeks ago, mid to high 90s. But since then it has been low 80s. If it turns pink in 80s, Celestial Night is going to be really unhappy when it's 105, and it is in my sunniest spot.
Again, the problem is it's flanked by True Inspiration (pink) Gentle Giant (pink w/yellow base) and Parade Day (pink stripe) I wanted purple/burgundy for contrast
    Moving day!!

I love true inspiration! Really healthy and disease resistant. Peony form of big blooms. Vigorous too. But it seems Lowe’s only sold it once and never again. Can’t find it anywhere...

Yes, I went back to look at it 3 times at Lowe's before I took the plunge , and so glad I did! It smells great, can take the heat and is so pretty!

    Beautiful picture!

Just saw a Celestial Night at a different local nursery that looked more purple, so there's hope!

I just saw Celestial Night at the annual Mothers Day plant sale at our co-op. It was dark and gorgeous! I was so tempted but hubby was with me and he is already complaining about the other 5 roses that still aren't planted from last weeks shopping trip.

My first bloom of Celestial Night - it is dark purple! So excited. I have 3 Celestial Night trees full of buds to be opened. Like Oliver I like in the SF Bay, and it has been cold and wet this spring. Temp for me now is in the 60's.

I am so glad to hear it's purple for some of you. I ended up moving it to the shade, it's a little darker, although I don't think it likes the 84 degree high we had today.

I just ordered Celestial night so was interested in the reviews

It's going in to a pot and will get sun until 2:30 or 3 maybe that will help with the fading and crisping

I will let you know what color it turns out to be and how healthy it is in Zone 8

I’m in a very sunny hot area of SoCal and my first blooms of celestial night, new last year, are more pink than purple but I hope with that will change with maturity.

I think that is gorgeous! I have one coming this week and after some reviews I have been a bit concerned but I figured that some roses do well in some locations and not so well in

Others. So seeing your beautiful rose gives me hope for a glorious rose of my own.

It is pretty. 😃 My issue is that I have it planted right next to a huge old Perfume Delight that is a similar hot pink color. The colors are too similar, I may move her. I was hoping for purple but I’m not going to make a judgement off the first year blooms.

From what I’ve seen Celestial Night and Intrigue are purple less often than Ebb Tide and Twilight Zone, and Celestial Night is less fragrant than those two as well. But its disease resistance is far better. Personally I’ll take purple and fragrant and know I‘ll have to spray. I do like rosy dreams‘ and sautesmom’s intense pink Celestial Night, its just not so purple. Lavender Crush is actually purple the most often for me, it’s the most fragrant, and the longest lasting....definitely my top purple.

I really want to get Lavender Crush, can’t seem to find it yet. Twilight zone and Ebb Tide when I see them at my local nursery are usually kinda pink too, looked nothing like everyone’s pics here. Which is why I thought I’d try celestial night but... 🤷‍♀️ Violet’s Pride stays a nice light lavender for me but I would like lovely dark purple rose.

I agree with Ben about Ebb Tide and Twilight Zone, though I don't have to worry about disease here in the desert. We have hot, dry summers, and TZ holds its color well. Ebb Tide tends to fade out in heat, but has gotten better over the years. I have three ET and two TZ, and I can't imagine better purples available today. They're not perfect, but nothing seems to be better currently. I was skeptical of Celestial Night when I first saw it, and its color looks pretty inconsistent. California and Texas, with their intense sun, are obviously hard on purple roses when it comes to holding color. Diane/nanadoll

Diane, I am always blown away by your purples, none better for color and size.

I have Celestial Night coming tomorrow. I will give it some love and see what we get . If it ends up being a dog then I get to pick something else down the road . At least I didn't pay a fortune for it.

Another great purple is Purple Prince from Australia.

That's amazing, Diane. Roseydreams, don't give up hope for Lavender Crush. It was widely available last year a Walmarts around the country. If you can't go out, perhaps call and just do a pick-up.

I have never seen Lavender Crush for sale in Sacramento, not at any top rose nursery, much less Walmart, HD or Lowes. Since we are a prime gardening market, it baffles me.

Oh my gosh Diane, what I would give to get that color!! Gorgeous and it would be a bonus if it didn’t burn in the sun, some of my deep reds do. Is the top pic Twilight Zone and the bottom, Ebb Tide? It makes me want to try them, maybe in morning sun only. 🤔
I haven’t seen lavender crush in the Los Angeles area anywhere either but my local nursery can sometimes order specific roses for me. I’m going ask them!

I recall Cori Ann bough multiple LC at her local garden center. I'll see if I can find the name although that was a few years ago now. It's odd how it's been most widely available at Big Box stores.

Thank you rosydreams. The pics are both Twilight Zone, and strangely, this rose doesn't burn in the sun here, though they probably would do some burning in your latitude. Morning sun or eastern exposure might be best to start with, at least. My worst burning roses are The Prince and Rouge Royale. Munstead Wood does a little burning, as does Young Lycidas. In the past, I've removed Heirloom and Blueberry Hill for burning. Ebb Tide still does a lot of fading out at the height of summer. Here's Ebb Tide last year. Diane

Wowee, just beautiful. In the first pic, what is the rose planted between Ebb Tide and, I think, Julia Child?

Diane, no one does purple better! Yours look like velvet.

Thanks, rosy and flowers. The "rose" you ask about is a peony. I love it, but it blooms for about 5 seconds. Diane
