Wood shingle I presume? Red or White cedar if cedar? How old of a roof? What shape is it in? Are the shingles on lath over plywood or just lath on open rafters? Have the shingles been treated?

At the change of the seasons, do a cursory inspection of the valleys and gutters and remove debris. Once a year, do a more intensive gridwork evaluation of the whole thing. That's if it's not old and in decent condition currently.

If it's an old roof, put a new regular roof and fuggedaboutit for the next 30 years.

Usually every 3 years for any roof and 5 years for slate.
