Okay! Thank you! I guess I got I got worried because I have found my first two dead worms and I'm wondering what could have killed them :( .. Yeah, I have been shredding the bag and moistening the shreds with water.

I seriously doubt there is any connection and worms die all the time (and decompose themselves). But in my experience (and everyone's experience differs), the most problems come from overfeeding and overly-wet conditions (leading to anaerobic conditions because no air). The problems are related because most worm 'food' (as opposed to bedding) is mostly wet and/or mostly composed of water. So err on the side of a bit too dry if you're not sure ('damp' is just fine for the worms).

So if there is a connection, and only speculating: you don't really need to wet the bedding you add. The benefit of adding dry bedding is that it will absorb water in the bin. Now, no need to be a fanatic - if the bedding you add is damp, especially harder bedding like cardboard, that's fine - but it really doesn't need to be and shouldn't be wet.

The other way I like to look at this and explain: if you have some dry-ish bedding and conditions elsewhere are too damp, the worms have somewhere to retreat to. I like to have a thick layer of shredded paper or cardboard on top - added dry. It absorbs water slowly, keeps most fruit flies and others out, and also tends to absorb/filter smells. It breaks down slowly over time (basically getting incorporated into stuff below by the worms); to feed, move the layer of bedding aside, put food down, move it back. When that top layer starts to get noticeably damp, add more.

Thank you. No, that is definitely really helpful. I have probably been too overly worried about keeping my bedding from getting dry. I like what you did with it, offer a place for the worms to go if they need to get away from too damp conditions. I'll try that.

"Too wet" is definitely worse than a bit too dry - too wet is anaerobic and worm death, too dry (as long as not completely devoid of moisture), the worms search out the water that is there. If you experiment, you'll see that dry bedding in a normal bin gets notably damp fairly quickly.

Note, I'm not saying that worms don't tolerate or like wet conditions - they do - just that 'too wet' can be very bad (and we humans may not understand the difference). The buffer zone that they can move to works in many different respects.

My only concern about the taco bell bags would be if they are notably waxy - which probably wouldn't be bad for them, the wax will likely break down too - but they just may not serve much of the normal purpose of bedding until the wax has degraded. Only way to know is to try it out.
