Boy the one thing your room didn't need was a mirror. Once I find myself in a hole, I stop digging. Get rid of the mirror. No sense in compounding a mistake.

I believe the anchors to the mirror are plastered in...it would be a pretty large undertaking to remove them and could result in damaging the mirror and an expensive fix .that might still show signs of the previous resident-- you have given me food for thought...do you have any ideas for how to answer my initial question or just prefer to lob insults as opposed to offering a creative solution.

There was nothing insulting in that reply and trust me I'd be the first one to cry foul if there was. Your mirror is akin to a sunk cost fallacy even if you weren't the one who put it there. It can be removed and whatever repairs needed can be done and then you have a clean slate to move on with. trying to work around the unworkable just because it's therewill be harder and cost you more in the long run. And you still won't end up with something that looks as appealing as you hope.

Other options would include an art ledge,a large piece of art that covers the mirror completely, or a slim shelf. Off hand though,I might not want to anchor anything to the wall ;-)

I think your mirror is very nice. I would suggest moving the couch, cofee table and everything a little bit more closer to the window to center the sofa with the mirror. I firmly believe children need to adapt to adult spaces. I think you have done a great job thus far as making it nice for adults and open for kids. If there is more wall space in your main living areas for art that would be good too. I think adding off white drapery panels on each side of the window will give a nice look as well as some faux greenery on the coffee table. Some more pics at different angles would help as well. Removing the mirror may easier than you think - many times for heavy objects they use cleats as a hanger. One part goes onto the wall, the other part on the object back - and they simply one drops in the other.

The only repair would be some patching of the holes from the wall cleat

You have an attractive space - don't let that mirror ruin in.

On thing you could add is a faux orchid arrangement to your coffee table

Love the art in your dining room! The wood cabinet in the living area is lovely as well. You have a good eye for color and space. I do not care for the glass coffee table in your space it seems just kind of alone there. I would pick a MCM wood one that would look amazing with the cool sofa.

I am in the camp of yes remove the mirror, hassle or not it would be best if it was not there.

You could cover the mirror until you mentally and financially afford to remove it.

you could try: Antiquing the mirror, covering with wallpaper, contact paper, curtains, wall stickers, mural, other art etc...look it up there are lots of ideas...

The mirror went up. It can come down. Yes, you'll need to fill in holes and repaint the wall. You have great taste in art and furniture, and that mirror wrecks it. Take it down.

Tatts, I have to disagree about the glass topped coffee table. Our Noguchi nicely survived 3 boys’ childhoods, and they did too. (Granted it had pipe insulation around the edge for a few years , but then it was such a treat when it came off!).
Not every room in the house has to be completely Nerf-fight-friendly!

I don't understand the reluctance to take out the mirror. People have no qualms about ripping out cabinets or entire walls: a mere mirror should be a piece of cake.

thank you all for the advice, a fun piece of art would be a nice add-on to the room especially since this area includes the foyer. its going to be a tough sell to the husband to spend $$$ removing and then purchasing a large piece of art. PS.... I already changing the chairs to green which will be a surprise to him :) What are the rules for sizing...of art over couch... room is 11.5 x 11.5 with 10 ft ceilings. Couch is 87 inches.

The mirror is fine. It reflects the light from the windows. I would just add a floor lamp to the corner near the window and a green plant to the coffee table. If you decide to move the mirror, your artwork needs to be large or you need a large grouping.

Basic rules for art over couch: 2/3 - 3/4 the width hung 5 - 8" over the back.

You want to remove the mirror? Go buy a tub of Spackle, get out the touch up paint; I'll be over with my crowbar shortly.

I would also change the coffee table, partly because it looks scary with three little kids, but also because everything in the room is boxy. A more organic table would look better, IMO.

How far does the mirror stick out? Hang art over it, one that has a boxy frame. Or if you like the mirror, hang a slim mirror above it and one under it...framed alike and same length.

What about something like this to take up the space and make the mirror look like it was hung higher on purpose.
