Heating & Air Conditioning Building a Home

Insulation/heating issue

Our new build has a small (4’x6’) storage room that opens only to the outside. Above is a landing that leads from the garage to the main house. Two walls are exterior, insulated frame walls, one wall is concrete with 2” foam insulation and the other wall is interior, but we will insulate it. The issue is that there is duct work to heat the landing space and we thought that the ceiling of the storage (floor of landing) would be insulated. Our GC is suggesting that he run heat to the storage. I am hesitant to heat a patio storage space. We are in Central Ontario; predominantly heating, not concerned with air conditioning. There is plenty of height to drop the ceiling and insulate well. What would be the better solution?

Depends what you want to use the storage room for, If it's something that needs to be kept above freezing then by all means insulate it and run a small leating duct to it. Otherwise, I would just insulate those walls/ceilings that abut the interior space.

I would insulate, because insulation is cheap especially for 4x6 , not sure I'd run any ductwork... 4 inch supply is

typically worthless, without the return it will pressurize and escape. But then again 4" supply with a manual damper and the ducting is about $30 and you can keep it closed.

I would insulate and heat now so much cheaper than later, you never know what the future may bring and what you will need to store.

Insulate well and consider using hydro heating to keep the air above the dewpoint. That way, you can use it to store metal objects, such as tools from rusting.

It would help to see a diagram of where the walls are located and where the exterior door is and its size and what the floor is. Is the stairway enclosed? Is there a window in it? Is the proposed duct in the storage room or between the floor joists above the the storage room or elsewhere? Can it be moved to avoid the storage room?
