90s Exterior Design Help!

last modified: 7 years ago

We just bought our new home in a wonderful neighbourhood and wanted to bring our 90s brick house into the 21st century. Some of the ideas we've been tossing around are painting windows/garage/trim black, tinting the beige brick to dark or to blend in, new siding, new front door, perhaps limewash...hoping you guys can help.

I think this house has great potential, but Im struggling with which design changes would make it look its best.

I added an example of a whitewash transformation that I think came out really well.

Thank you!

We renovated the entire main floor, the master bath and basement. So the inside is coming along really well!

If you want to go dark with the trim, I would not do black. Black doesn't go with the brick, and it's just so boring. I'd use a very, very dark brown, like oil-rubbed bronze, but that's really close to what you have now (at least as it appears on my monitor), which looks pretty good.

I'd replace the front door, pronto.

I'd minimize the looks of the lighter bricks--make them blend a bit better.

I'd square-up that Palladian window above the front door. That's easy and not expensive--it probably already has the headers for the rectangular opening.

But that leaves the window over the garage; that will be a tricky fix unless you turn the whole triangle into clapboard like the other sections (which would look better than all that brick).

I would keep in mind that Colors contrasting on different materials and areas on a home, highlight the details of architecture and add so much interest to any canvas.

Thanks Tatts, I hadn't thought of very dark brown, but I think that would look really nice too! I also like the idea of changing the space above the garage!

What you likely can't see is the 30 years of aging/sun damage along all the clapboard and trim. Perhaps originally all of the trim was a beautiful very dark brown...but it has lost its lustre for sure

    Urbane Bronze looks great w/brick

    or Iron Ore

BM Wrought Iron is more of a charcoal

Beth, would you suggest to paint all the trim that color or the clapboard?

aren't they both the same color now? I like them both dark. No way would I do any sort of white trim (not if you keep the brick unpainted).

I like these two darker ones too (ignore the placement for them) The raisin or the Midnight Oil might look nice for the trim/siding. hard to tell without a sample

a Jap. Maple would be a great addition to your yard if you're staying dark

I forgot the siding... adding to my previous ideas, I would paint or replace siding in the beige color. . Your brick will be the drama and come to life, as well as a blue entry door as the focal point.

Not a fan of the pink quoins and arches. All I would do to this house is stain them dark gray and replace the door.

    oh amazing! thanks grover

I like Grover’s idea, but maybe pick a dark color in the brick and paint the siding the same. Love the door Grover chose.

I'm not 100% sold on the dark quoins...perhaps I can get them stained to match the rest of the brick

I didn't realize you wanted everything to blend. Is that what you want? I think It has beautiful architecture that probably won't be seen much without some contrast in color for details. If you match colors, I think, the beauty of the home will get lost, especially since it seems you are set back on your lot quite far.

You can stain the brick. Www.dyebrick.com
  • 7 years ago
I like the one where the brick is all the same color. You can also use some updating to your landscape but I wouldn’t worry about that until you decide on the brick. There may be brick dye companies in the US, I am just familiar with the UK company. You can literally mix it to match your brick.

    WOW grover you are amazing!

I agree LB...maybe blend the brick and then work on accents? You guys think I should toss out the idea of paint/limewash?

    last modified: 7 years ago

grover, can you do the garage doos and siding in Urbane bronze, or black? maybe new garage lights?

I already did the doors on this one

chris,,,if you go w/the darker tones, throw down a black mulch in your beds. these are small pebbles, but wanted to show you the black against the cedar tones /brick

    chrisandkitty thanked Beth H. :

White with black accents would be a crazy transformation, but I don't think I'm brave enough

Wow Beth thank you o much, and yes I love black mulch!

chrisandkitty, I'm 'not' fond of blending the brick, I like the contrast 'as it is'.

chris,,,I think either one will look good. the mock up grover did, dark siding, black garage doors, new lights, a front door like in my mock ups, and maybe your cedar arbor you like.

or, the Romabio lime wash like some of those earlier examples I posted, with the same black.

I went to their website and saw that it's easily removed with a garden hose or pressure washer within the first 5-7 days.

So, you could get a small bucket and paint a section on the back to see how you like it.

Read this page and it answers all your questions about the product

Very handsome house. I'd change the door and the lights. Think the garage doors would look better if they were of a similar colour as the roof or brick, as Beth illustrated. Current colour doesn't harmonize. Current brick detail looks very nice and distinctive. I wouldn't change it.

I agree with groveraxl , just stain the pink in dark gray and change the front door ... It's a beautiful house !
If you think you’d like to lime wash the whole house, then try Beth’s idea of sampling it on the back of the house where you can hose it off.
I saw a house in our area that was a plain brick, with Palladium windows, that overnight became a white house. It looks amazing. I am sure they hesitated too, but it was dramatic choice and now it’s a striking home. It’s on a small hill and this plain ranch now looks stately.
Having said that, changing the pink areas, as groveraxle showed you, would retain the current look of the house but make it more demure. It almost looks like a dressed up woman with one “too much” piece of jewelry.
Either way you go, this is a nice house. Interesting lines.

Just wanted to thank everyone on here for helping.

Last summer we did some minor updates, totally overhauled the gardens and painted the garage doors black. Looks great.

This spring we are going to stain the brick of the house so the brick is all the same, similar to what groveraxle recommended.

Do you guys have any inspiration for colour of brick?

We have been in contact with a brick staining company, and they can basically do anything in regards to colour https://nawkaw.com

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Thanks again everyone!

I really like deleting the pink/beige brick, but I think we could have fun with the colour...

The before/after of the lime washes just don't appeal AT ALL. Doesn't help that I hate white houses I suppose. I do like the deleting the pink/beige brick rendering.

Are you considering Beth’s color ideas for the garage and trim? I’m happy you made a decision (with all those great suggestions, your head might have been spinning). I think a color closer to black will improve the contrast now that the house brick is all one color.

I love architectural features of a home being highlighted by color accents. I thought it was quite eye-catching at the onset, maybe a few tweaks would be enough. MO.

We haven't done anything to the brick just yet.

The picture I attached was a rendering groveraxle did.

I really like the idea of changing it to all one colour, or perhaps a new accent colour?

Whitewash is too big of a change for us, would be bold for sure!

Thank you all so much for helping!!!

Any thoughts with the siding at the top of the house and around that one window?

decide what you're doing to the brick first. if you paint the brick a solid color, then you do a wood siding up there, or shake or paint it a diff color. but w/the brick the way it is, I'd leave or paint it another color

For the siding and the brick details .... I would choose a mid-tone color from the existing brick. Somewhere between the lightest color and the darkest color.

The all white is so boring.

The only way it would be at all interesting would be if you added at least two more colors to it making it like a Queen Anne Revival, but this is not a Queen Anne Revival House, so what is the point of that?

Personally love the black and white theme idea.. bold classic scheme for a home with some character. IF you really want to add color at that point you can do a painted door for a real nice pop!

Your house reminds me of these bloggers' home. They did some pretty drastic things to update, but you could get ideas for colors from them. I agree that getting rid of the two-tone will update it a ton, and a new door. Maybe dark and monochromatic? That looks more current to me these days than white with black trim, although I think a white house is pretty classic. https://www.chrislovesjulia.com/the-exterior-of-our-home-today/

Hello, does anyone happen to know the color white used in the house transformation in the before and after image at the beginning of the thread?

Looking for ideas to transform this one if anyone has some ideas:

    Original:

    White Version:

Dark Green Black version (roof would be darker)

andrew,, that 2nd picture looks more like a very soft white/gray.

try some of these combos. ( the one on the right looks good)

Eider White (below) is another 'white' that looks similar to that house color. has an overall gray tone to it

    here's your dark green/black
