Please help identify this baby shrub or tree

I swore I put a dogwood seed in the ground right here, this is year two for this guy. Not looking like a dogwood to me. Anyone know what this is? It has a light colored trunk starting, course the top died over the winter so it is bushing out. It's only about 6 inches tall. Eastern Plains Colorado. Thank you!!!
