So true, Ingrid. Those red stamens with the yellow inside! Uggh! It's so beautiful. HMF says it can be grown as a climber. I wonder how hardy?

I have it here, it won’t be a climber in Z5 I don’t think, but this is a keeper! I need to take some pics but it’s bouncing back nicely from our crazy winter and spring weather. Jacqueline yours is just gorgeous! I got mine from Long Ago Roses.

I've never LOOKED for hips ... but I dearly love the buds, not to mention the blooms. I'm very happy to know that a few folks have it.

vaporvac - re cold hardiness, it is said to be a Soulieana hybrid, and HMF says that rose is hardy to zone 4. Also, there are pics of Dawn Crest on HMF from Northern Germany and Poland, AND Russia, so it seem to me that your zone 6 should be OK. Also, Dingo2001 says above that is is doing fine in Chicago in zone 5. I think most of the pics on HMF are from CA is because Jeri named it and spread it around CA, because that is where she is. So, try it! It is very fragrant, always has clean foliage w/o any spraying, and in my zone 9 Northern CA garden it repeats.

I just went out and checked my DC for hips left over from last year. I found a few "not-a-hips" dried up, and only 2 hips on the whole plant. Here is a pic of them - they are spherical, now brownish red but might once have been red, and are only 3/8th of an inch in diameter. So, no, I would not say Dawn Crest makes much of a hip display. I will check again next Fall to see what they look like when fresh.

In all the years I had Dawn Crest, I found few hips (it NEVER formed any hips from any pollen I applied to it) and those I found remained green and contained very few seeds. The two self seedlings I raised from it resembled it greatly and the only decent results I raised from its pollen have been using L56-1 as the seed parent and haven't been worth retaining.
