It really depends on what you plan to store in the island. I'd take an hour or two to really figure out your exact needs for the island. 15 inches is probably fine for potholders, silverware, utensils, napkins, etc. but not adequate for pots and pans. Also, is there a difference in the height of the 18 inch versus the 15 inch? That could be an issue to consider.

Our island is 46" wide with drawers almost the whole length. Love it for pots and pans.

Like Kim asked, what do you plan to store in the cabinets? Have you made a plan for where you're storing things? It's an ok size for pot holders/trivets, saran wrap/etc, but too narrow for cutlery dividers.

Also, even tho the cabinet is 15", the inside dimension of the drawer is probably closer to 12.5"...

15" is a great size for knives or cutting boards on the shallow drawers.

I could see using the wide side for pots & the narrow side for pot lids (keeping them at the same height, so middle drawer pots have their lids right next door). And the 15" wide side would probably work well for mixing bowls, colanders, etc.

OTOH - if it looks "off" to you and you think that imbalance will bug you forever, then have it changed.

Your millworker should've delivered what was designed & spec'd, not what he /she had laying around the shop. 15" would be a minimum cabinet in a commercial setting, reserved for small trash bins & small dry storage. As per the above comments/ photos - you'd be hard pressed to fit pots & pans in there.

Once they get installed, you won't be able to remove them - the GC will then side with the cabinet maker subcontractor to save time and the relationship. You're best bet is to get the GC on the phone immediately (or the kitchen design studio) and have them fix the problem. You have every right to with hold payment until it's correct, as you probably signed off on the final drawings.
