Need advice on exterior remodel

We are under contract on this house, we love the house, the yard and the neighborhood, but are working on ideas to solve 2 issues. The front door opens into a very small space (maybe 2ft deep -max) that ends at the side of a 2 story brick fireplace So you literally open the front door to a brick wall. You can then either go right to a formal dining room or left to the family room. Both of these rooms have 8 ft ceilings. Only the fireplace and the small staircase behind it are 2 stories. So the beautiful fireplace kind of gets lost. We are thinking about adding a portico or bump out on the front to create a true foyer and allow some space to greet visitors. Which brings us to the 2nd issue. This house is out of character for the town, which is dominated by mid century homes, atomic ranches, split levels and eclectic remodels. Looking for advice on what to do to with the front that will help solve both issues. We would like to keep the porch and balconies but maybe give it a more contemporary or modern farmhouse type of feel with black windows/doors and cable railings. Open to any and all ideas!
