Rug Size Advice

I live on a small bungalow, and I’m trying to decor the living room. I found this rug, but I have the feeling it is too small. Am I right? Any suggestions?

Ps: the coffee table will be replaced, too.

Thank you!

I don’t always think the feet of the furniture need to sit on the rug in fact if my clients have persian rugs I never put them under the feet of furniture. This is mine but I do think all the furniture needs to be connected to the rug somehow so I think in your case you need a larger one and maybe something like a shag with all the smooth leather

IMO, it should be at least two feet wider than the sofa and two feet wider than the hearth to give a grounded and balanced feeling. When sofas/chairs are up on legs, I think they look better with more rug under them; at least under the front 1/3 as a minimum. Use painter's tape on the floor to get some standard rug sizes taped out and see what feels like a better fit for your space.

    Too small. Use this guide

Not sure from your photo why all your furnishings seem to be shoved in the corner, but they could use some breathing room IMO.

Your gut is correct, it is too small. I would do something around this size (or even larger):

I would also shift your couch to the right about a foot and center the rug to it.

    Also, great couch and artwork!

    Thank you, everyone!
    Please, keep the comments coming.

I liked the sketchs you sent with the right rug size. I’ll do some measurements to see what size I should be looking for. The rug on the picture is a 5x7’.

Only so you have a better understanding of the layout here, I’m posting 2 more pictures. By the right side of the sofa, I have my entry so, I can’t move much if to the right. (I’m removing the tall plant by it, jfyi.)

Btw, I know that the dinning table is too big for the space, but, unfortunately I had it before moving here and can’t change it for now. :-)

Great clean space to work with! Yeah, move the plant to the corner so your couch isn't so close to the fireplace. That will give you more room to work with for the rug. Some painters tape on the floor will go a long way in planning rug sizes since most rugs are standard sizes.

Yes to the bigger rug. Also know that many rugs, while listed as 9 by 12 or 8 by 10 are in fact several inches bigger or smaller. So check closely. Once the larger rug is in the space, your dining area (which is fab, btw) will look in better proportion.

Love your room! Fine minimalist design. I agree with everything Glo said about size of rug and switching the plant and the sofa. I'd like to see the sofa and chair connected with both of them touching the rug.

With so many hard angles in the room, I think a more abstract rug might look better.

    Love all the ideas.
If you have any suggestions on the hug style and color scheme, please send it! I’m looking for a perfect one for the space.

I just measured the room. From the hearth until the end of the wall behind the sofa is 9’8” and the hearth is 5’. So, my guess is a 10x8’ rug would work. Correct?

Maybe a rug like the one used here?

Groveraxle, I really liked how the 4th picture looks like. So you know the source of that rug?
    Thank you!

Priscila, all the rugs above except the first and last are from Crate & Barrel. First and last rugs are from West Elm.
