Best way to protect the bark?

This maple was bent over in the snow. It has now taken up a position that blocks the steps. I plan to use some y pieces cut from vine maple to prop it up. I plan to wrap some cloth around the y pieces to try to protect the bark of the maple. Is there a better way?

With the shape it has now you could even install an arch, to get an arbor effect.

That's an interesting idea and will give it some thought. In the meantime I remembered I have some foam, water pipe insulator and covered the Y ends with that and have propped them up.
