Suggestion for cat fur clumps

I have a cat that for want of a better term forms tightly woven clumps of fur on his sides that resemble fish scales. I do not know if it is just the way his fur grows or he cleans himself and his saliva helps form the clumps. His fur can be fine in the evening then by midday the next the clumps start forming. He lays on my leg and allows me to brush the up side but seldom the side he lays on. I have tried one of those things that supposedly cut the tangles as it is draw through the fur but the clumps are too tight for it to do more than pull at his fur. His fur is just over an inch long in the sides and back and I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion of a product that I could use to break up the scales. I thought of hair detangle products before brushing but hesitate using a human product on him. We do have a salon that will bath cats and I have wondered if he would benefit from regular bathing.

I have often heard of Mackerel Backed Tabbies and since he arrived have wondered if the fur clumping is something they have or is it only a coloration pattern.
