Rental bedroom help

We are renting a place for about a year or two before moving and the bedroom for my son has ugly paneling & dark woods including on the ceiling. The windows are very small so not much light enters either. It has potential, I feel but I’m not sure where to begin. The carpet is light blue/gray. We have a gray plaid sort of comforter for my son but will be buying a new bed. Probably will not have any dressers since there is so much storage with the built in & closets. I do not think we are allowed to paint anything. Help?
