Also, have you thought about doing any ring pulls on the back? Might look stunning against the black. The wood looks brown in the photos. If so, have you considered painting those parts black as well?

I love the concept you’re going for. My advice is only that i think you can source a better leopard than the one you have there. I will see what i can find. The Particular one you’re showing looks very heavy. I also wonder where these chairs are going? Dining table? I think that doing the two fabrics Is great but knowing how and where they will sit is what will dictate where each fabric should go.

Here is an example of fabric choice. Animal print is great but it needs to be the right one.

If you put solid black on the exterior back of your chair it will get lost against the dark finish of your chair. I would consider doing some hardware feature.

So i. Conclusion love the animal print idea but think you need a more refined print to go on those chairs and should you choose solid black for exterior back a hardware detail.

It looks like you love leopard (based on your pocketbook on the table). If that's your thing, go for it!

OP, As pink_peony said, the quality of the leopard fabric is what will make or break the look. I love where you want to go with this. It's nice to see someone doing something glam and fun and not so basic. I have always loved the look of two fabrics on a chair when they are done well. As for the poster who stated that it looked " Kardashian ", I don't think Architectural Digest would feature them if they had "tacky" homes. I don't watch their show but saw the layouts in AD and they all have stunning homes.

I think the fabric shows too yellow.

Question: I see a leopard print on the box on the table but am I right in that there is a leopard print also on the stairs?

I love animal print but also find this one is too yellow. Black velvet sounds nice but will it pick up dust too easily? Perhaps not, as a vertical surface, but perhaps something to keep in mind.

Thank you all. I had a very hard time finding the leopard print. If anyone can source it or find one close let me know.
I would be happy to work with a designer. It was super hard to find one.

The purse on the table is indeed leopard. As you all know leopard is in this year.

My carpet is also leopard and gorgeous.

When is leopard ever out?! :D It can be overdone though. Even if it's in, dressing head to toe in leopard is usually "too much". It's one of those neutral prints best used judiciously.

I agree with you on that! It has to be used very carefully. And the right pattern.

There are leopard prints around with less garish colours. A softer-toned one would work better.

I like the idea, but would look around for a better leopard print. Like Pinkpeony stated, finding the right one will make quite a bit of difference.

That fabric you have seems a little large and too yellow/gold. Look at some of these examples and try to find something similar.

this type goes better w/your flooring (and the black velvet on the back would look great. )

more of a snow leopard or smaller spots.

I like this one, below, too. much better looking print than the one w/the gold.

more of a giraffe, but looks great w/the black enamel paint

thank you Beverly and Beth!!! i like the idea of putting the leopard on the inner and outer back and black on the seat. Love that. I will still search for a different leopard print. so the search continues...

I came across this take on leopard and thought it was cool and comes in a few colors, but I think it’s VERY expensive. Sharing in case it appeals to you. https://www.zimmer-rohde.com/en/zr/collections/fabric-detail/?id=1044100893&colorit=1044100898

Molly,,really nice! for 187 bucks a yard, it better have free shipping! lol

Germaine, found some other nice examples for both the chairs, and surrounding design.

If you want to incorporate a bit of leopard w/your room, try something like this (if you have the travertine floor w/the black granite accents, this would be a great match)

maybe you could find some chinoiserie type of dining chairs:

or, try something like this, w/the leopard on the front portion of the black one

    travertine floor w/more of a black/white print:

if you want the golden leopard, then look how the rest of the room brings in golden tones w/black and white...

warmer tones on the wall to go w/the leopard/gold accents:

    Thanks Beth
My dining room is more traditional. It currently has a Persian carpet (picture on the right) which I plan to replace with sisal carpet. I would like to paint the walls black to give it drama with off white silk curtains.

I've been a leopard lover ever since I can remember, but as many others noted...the 'right' leopard can make or break anything it's wrapped in.

Personally I'm in LOVE with the first seat BeverlyFLADeziner posted.

Reupholstery is very pricey. If you don't love the print you found, wait to find the right one.

Side note: I envy your print/color bravery. I'm very timid in using prints/colors....our house is all muted colors with ZERO print of any sorts. :)

BeverlyFLA and Beth, how can I get my hands on this beauty you posted? AND, do I have to sell our house to be able to afford it?

Have you thought about doing the 2 end chairs in the animal print and the remaining in white silk (or faux silk) to match the silk draperies you plan to hang? I would choose an animal print that has more black and white in that case.. However, I love your table and the beautiful wood tone would look good with some of the prints that have a little of that deep gold “ish” brown color. Your home looks beautiful!

The animal print on the chair just above shwshw’s post would be lovely with your table and with soft white silk.

Lots of great advice here. I’m not a decorator but the addition of hardware against the black back seems necessary. Keep that part of the cost in mind. Just having a leopard seat could be beautiful.

It's a beautiful idea ...only you HAVE to search long and wide for the right print . This one is too yellow and cheap looking .
Anyhow ..yes, your chairs should be painted black ...and I would take the leopard print off the stairs and paint the stairs black ...as well . And yes with the right leopard ..the room can be black ...make sure you have wonderful lights or chandeliers ...
What about zebra ?? With your beautiful flooring ...could be stunning . The leopard print you need has to be more white/ grey or very pale yellow ....! Goooooood luck!

Jora, here is the link for that chair you like

^ you could also do two king chairs like these, and the others do a solid fabric

another type of chair w/two-tone fabric

or, something like these, painted white, would look nice in the black dining room.

    other chair ideas

and since you like a black dining room:

Of course, main thing is where are these chair(s) going to be used. Plus, if you already have a lot of animal prints perhaps a bright kelly green or hot pink would be an interesting twist. I would like to see pictures of space these chairs will fit into.

Thank you all for the constructive comments. Please do not focus on my Prada purse or leopard stairs. That is a different room.

Leopard is tough indeed. This is going into dining room which is dark. Unfortunately Houzz will not allow me to update the pictures or edit.

Beth, your ideas are awesome. I love the two tones on a chair. I have even thought about doing blue velvet on the back with the leopard. Thought it was too crazy.

Oh I love the idea of a bright color on the chairs inside or back. But if in the dining room, what other colors are in that room? What other fabrics? What is table like?

Beautiful room!! Love the dark walls! The walls look to be a deep bronze color. Is that accurate? If so, the animal print you show would work well. I think a bright royal purple on the backs would be really stunning!

Maybe even deeper in tone than this. Just depends on where you want the color palette to go.

I will say your rug is spectacular. Sisal in this room seems wrong. You have exotic look going so maybe pull tones from Persian rug and go deep blue on walls with interesting animal print on chairs? Bbl

I have been looking, but really need some input from Germaine before I look for perfect fabrics. I love fabrics and I like actually starting with fabrics, because they can set the tone for a whole room.

Thank you FLo, i really like something close to what I chose on top. the fabric that is pictured is from Frabic HQ, Braemore Jamil Natural Fabric. i like the look to be close to the real thing.

the pattern actually changes color in the light. One minute my husband loves it and the next he hates it. it is so close to the Dolce Gabanna leopard. i have searched the web non stop. It is frustrating.

    Is this it?

Yes that’s the fabric I have. It takes on a different look in different light. I bought one yard to test it.

I tried different combinations on this test chair. The look depends on which section of the fabric you use. I mixed it with the black velvet fabric which I was going to use on the back. I am leaning toward the third picture. All leopard on the front and black velvet in the back. I think if I use another color like blue or purple on the back the contrast would be too much.
This job is not easy...I don’t know how designers do this.

  • PRO

Yes. Think about this because your chairs are tricky to do. It appears they currently have large nail heads? There is not a clean separation of front and back so you might need to do backs and inside front in the animal fabric and perhaps a leather on the seat. Maybe a died ostrich leather for the seat. I would consult with upholsterer to ascertain best method to apply to these chairs.

I just saw this story here on Houzz. Look at the picture and what the designer wrote about animal prints.

Thornton added animal prints throughout the home. “The best way to mix animal prints is to mix them with other prints or colors that are strong. You can’t dip your toe in. You’ve got to really go for it fearlessly; otherwise the animal prints will look too bold compared to everything else,” she says.

Leopard = timeless. YES. Loving the leopard on top with a black seat. But not velvet. I think Flo mentioned dyed ostrich and I think a) exotic leather seat? Heck yeah! GO FLO! and b) faux alligator. Just don't do velvet, you're better than that. It's too easy.

Velvet, especially black, is a dust magnet! Something to keep in mind...

That was my first thought as well, Jora.

I like the idea of a leather upholstery for the seat with the print on the front and back best.
