From Exposed Demountable to Concealed Hinges?

We were hoping to replace the exposed hinges on our cabinets with concealed hinges, but we realized our cabinet doors already have large holes from the old hinges, which we think are called double demountable or single demountable (not sure what the difference is). Unlike the new hole required by concealed hinges, the current holes are cut into the edge of the cabinets.

Is it possible to go from one style to the other, or are we stuck with the old style?

Are the edges of the cabinet doors routed?

IF you can match the overlay of the old hinges to the new hinges AND there is sufficient meat (routed edge???) for new borings AND you can live with the old borings being exposed, I don't know of any reason why changing hinges won't work.

(Since the edges were routed for the original hinges, I'm assuming that there will be sufficient wood to support new borings.)

But I have not personally tried to do this; there may be some reason why it won't work that I have not thought of...
