Congratulations! I'm happy for you. Yes, fruit trees take more work than they're worth in FL.

I had 6 citrus trees at my old house, and never got much fruit from them in the 14 years I was there. The fruit usually froze or a storm would blow all the blooms off in the spring. The only one that bore consistently was the Nagami kumquat. I never got but one lemon from the Meyer. The last couple of years I was there, two of the oranges bore well, but then we had a late freeze, and I lost all that fruit. The Key Lime had one good year, then after that, only a few every year. I never got one banana or lychee. The starfruit was the only tree that bore consistently, and I had neighbors who liked to steal them.

The only thing I could count on was the Surinam cherry, and it put out so much fruit, most of it fell to the ground before I could eat it. Nobody else I knew liked them, so the birds and bugs had a field day on the dropped fruit.

I really miss SC, where I had all manner of fruit trees & bushes that bore like mad every year with little to no work at all. I especially miss the wild plums.

I've not had good luck with fruit. I think they require more fertilizer and sprays for insects and diseases than what I've done. Right now I have the 2 apples, and last year we bought a small Meyer lemon. So I'm not expecting anything for a long time on the lemon. I had a neighbor in Tampa that had a huge one and it bore fruit all year. I've tried and lost 2 fig trees, 2 loquat trees, 2 avocadoes and one peach tree. I have a feeling that there are just certain people who should grow fruit and the rest can do the green beans and the marigolds.
