can we see the full stem? how it attaches to the leaf.

Is there a main stem from which leaves grow or not? also need a pic of crown if there is one.

Depends on whether the elephant ear is an alocasia or colocasia. colocasia can be slightly submerged in water but under a full sun but alocasia, it is a no no

I would have to go back to her room to do that but the next time I do that is when I repot it for her. I don’t remember about the main stem with leaves .

I cant tell if it’s colocassia or alocassia tbh. However she has been overwatering it and some of foliage were yellow. When I also took it out of its original pot a few of the roots were mushy, indicating start of rot. So does that make it an alocasia ? It is also a houseplant that never goes outside as she does not have a patio or balcony. I wish I knew about this more to help her but my knowledge on tropicals are somewhat limited compared to temperate plants.

i did an image search and it looks to me like Alo gageana 'California' - it is supposed to be a smaller Alo. and can be grown in pots indoors as houseplant. Most alo's are too big for that and usually are grown outside in summer.

care on most sites: keep it moist, it likes water. but usually good drainage is also recommended. so adding some small bark/coir chips and perlite to houseplant soil will be good. don't use just straight soiless mix, add at least 40% by volume of other stuff.

Ok so that explains why the plant was starting to rot, because it is an alocasia which cannot tolerate wet feet unlike a colacasia. Unfortunately my company won't allow me to buy extra material like perlite of bark fines for minor things like that. Perhaps I may bring in some of my own personal perlite for her and add a layer of pebbles or gravel underneath the pot to increase drainage.

No gravel at the bottom. That's a myth.

If you're going to undertake repotting you could easily put it in a plastic pot with multiple drain holes and set it inside the decorative pot. I believe I have the same pot and a pot liner fits nicely inside.
