I used to have a stove that you lit with a match. Always worked. Those days seem to be gone. I just installed a WiFi enabled stove for a client. Why?

Around 2002 or so, when my parents moved into a retirement apartment living complex, they had to get a new microwave--only other one they had had since they got the Litton in 1974. Anyway, my dad got a mid-size Sharp or Panasonic and the control panel was along the top facing portion -- all buttons, timer count down, and time of day display. First time I'd ever seen anything like it. A foretelling of things to come.

There are two types of "touch" panels ... capacitive (hard surface, fully electronic) and membrane (soft surface, actually mechanical, pressing on the surface touches the contacts together).

The membrane type is less reliable in my experience. A "button" may stick and prevent all the others from working. The surface can crack from repeated presses over time, be damaged by fingernails if not pressed with the softer pad of the finger (bad usage habits). Etc.

Any type of control mounted into a moving door is a bad design regards to the connecting wires or ribbon cable flexing every time the door is opened/closed.

BobA1, I had/have a Sharp Platinum Collection microwave with the membrane panel and alphanumeric display on the door. It's stashed in my garage, works but some of the display segments have gone dead so the entry prompts are not readable.

I have seen that microwave in your garage and noted that it looked like the same one my parents got.
