Corn? Seriously, if you fertilize with manure some corn could have come in with it. Young corn plants don't always look great.

Not corn imo. Did you have any Cannas in your garden last year?

no to the corn ... the leaves are nice and smooth.

And I did have cannas in a bed 15 feet away... and I typically cut the spent blooms.

I'll have to let this thing go and see what happens.

Oddly enough it looks like some kind of ginger

I know... I actually have a few gingers but they too are in different beds and none set seed... though this is looking just like one. Because of my zone though I have to add a bunch of straw mulch over them.

I only guessed canna because I didn't know there are gingers hardy in z6. Ginger is actually more likely if there are such.

I took a pic of my Zingiber Mioga ginger (below) and it does seem to match. This “weed” I was trying to ID is is 40 feet away and around the side of the house. I would never have thought that a randomly transplanted piece would have made it through our winter which and a few weeks solid of negative temps in the winter.

Floral_UK… I’ve tried about 4 types of gingers and a few have made it through winters with some cover. One is Heydychium 'Anne Bishop'.. which doesn't seem to be multiplying much. This is the third year and I just get 3-4 canes each year. The blooms on it are really nice in late summer. The second is the Zingiber mioga pictured below. This one is growing like a weed! The small clump purchased 3 years back is now spread out quite a bit.... maybe too much. This one gets odd ball blooms down at the bottom of the cane at ground level.. not much to look at but botanically interesting.

Ohhhh....love the Spigelia poking out underneath!! This is on my 'must-have' list but proving very difficult to locate in my area. It is on order for me at my local nursery but getting kind of late. I may be forced into mail order, which I generally avoid like the plague......... :-)

ha... yeah it's was a pain to find until a local nursery i rarely go to had a few on sale at the end year for a buck a piece. I am hoping it bulks up some... though I will have to move it from the attacking ginger.

PS: I attended a symposium with Tony Advent from Plants Delight and he talked about Spigelia... and then another variety that is restricted to Alabama called Spigelia gentianoides. Looks like a really neat plant.
