Backsplash ideas with Taj Mahal countertop and off-white cabinets

We’ve selected cabinets in an off white, canvas color and Taj Mahal countertops. I’m looking for backsplash ideas that would complement these and not distract from the beauty of the Taj Mahal quartzite. Our floors are oak in a honey finish. Appliances are stainless steel.

I would pick up one of the colors in the Taj Mahal for the backsplash.

Good suggestion to pick from colors in the Taj Mahal. I’m thinking of an arabesque pattern backsplash but I’m not sure what size or color. If anyone has pictures to share or other suggestions I’d appreciate it.

Hi, that Taj Mahal looks lovely but I'm having a hard time telling what the colours are. I found some arabesque tiles on Tilebar that might work for you. They have a sample offer so it is worth ordering some in to see them in person in your lighting and against the counter.

This one might be too grey - it looks quite taupey to me.

I like this one with the contrasting colours but I think it becomes the star of the kitchen, over the Taj Mahal. Depends on what you want to be the star and what will be supporting cast.

I quite like this one. Very pretty and classic looking. I'd do a coordinating grout colour, maybe a light colour to almost match but the tile, enough so you can notice the individual shape of the tile. If the grout colour is too close to the tile, then the whole thing just looks like one piece and you lose the uniqueness of the shape of the tile.

What do you think? Any of these work for you?

I say get a fancy shape if you really love it. Once you lay the Taj Mahal horizontally and step back it just looks like a cream/tan counter. Some TM slabs have little movement and some have a lot.

I used the Encore tile below, but in a tone on tone mix and it works very well with my TM. I had to get many samples from Encore before I found the perfect colors. From the distance the backsplash and counters actually look like they are the same color. It is actually quite simple in the overall look.

People need to step out of the box!

Here's one of my favorite kitchen reveals, with Taj Mahal & Daltile backplash from when I was planning my own reno a number of years ago. I can't figure out how to post the photos from the discussion on this one, but if you follow the link, the poster lists the specific materials part way through the thread: Taj Mahal kitchen reveal

I post posted on another Taj Mahal question and saw yours. We just finished a remodel with Taj Mahal and creamy white cabinets. Finding the backsplash drove me crazy as I wanted something simple and a fairly white kitchen. Most white subway was too stark and made the creamy cabinets look dingy. The colored tile I felt distracted from the Taj. I finally found what I loved by Alyse Edwards, tongue in chic collection. It looks hand made and is longer and thinner than standard subway. About 2.5” X 10”. I used the Bisque color. Even tho my cabinets are creamy and the tile bisque, it appears white but not stark and compliments the Taj Mahal. That tile collection probably has a color that blends well with you cabinet color. I’ll include pics of mine.

@jlemail3 thank you! Your kitchen is gorgeous! I'm saving these pictures to reference. I love your selections!

Thanks mari314...our remodel took forever and I obsessed over everything. I was going to do a herringbone pattern but my contractor who does tons of high end kitchens talked me out of it at the last min. The cabinet color came out more cream than I had wanted but in the end with the backsplash it all worked. Best of luck on yours!

Oh...PS...after you get done, you will see everything else that needs remodeling, lol. Now our cheap original builders gold door knobs look awful. I want to change the whole house to the black or oil rubbed bronze along with the hinges. It costs a fortune!

@jlemail3 I'm looking at the Alyse Edwards tile and I just love it. Did you match the grout to the tile? Yours looks so good!

Yes, I matched the closest grout color he had. He uses Prism brand grout which is stain resistant and with my Bisque it color tile, he used Alabaster color grout. He tried Antique White, but I think it was darker. Once the tile was up, I kind of liked the look of seeing the individual tiles and thought of doing a bit darker, but the tile guy said the Alabaster would look best with my tile. Which tile did you choose? Be sure and post your photos when done and I hope it turns out just how you want!

Hard to tell, but pretty close grout color.

We used Victoria in “Natural” from the Venetian Vintage collection from Surface Art. It’s beautiful. Sorry I don’t have picture accessible.

I used glass tile that I purchased at Lowe’s. Very neutral. I also have white shaker cabinets. Wish I had a close up of the tile. I used white unsanded grout.

Jlemail - what color did you paint walls? I am also struggling with creamy cabinets.

I have Taj Mahal in my butlers pantry and used this tile. It’s from Cercan tile.

I love your kitchen.! What color sink did you use? Did you use oiled bronze for your faucet?
