No, they never made fans like that. Ceiling fixtures are great for seeing how to get into a room in the dark. Then you turn them off or dim them down and turn on floor, table and accent lamps to add warmth and intimacy to a room. Ceiling light is unflattering to spaces and people.

Not sure they ever did, really. If you don't care about style, though, just look for one that takes a number of bulbs, and use LED bulbs that put out lots of lumens (60-100-Watt equivalent each).

Go fan shopping, they still make them.

I definitely recommend looking at LED ceiling fans. They will give off bright, useful light with lots of energy efficiency, plus the bulbs are dimmable, so you can adjust the light level as needed. Here are just a few options that might fit the bill for you. (I do also recommend pairing a fan with plug-in table lamps for your bedside, though.)
