Did the pot have any labels or other information on it? Sometimes the receipt will have a plant name on it. Which store sold it to you?

Both plants in photo were named by the shop assistant. The store is in Toronto, Canada. I've shopped there often - always very good stock.

You can do a 8- 10 inch pot. The weather is good but not great for us yet.. I'm just north of you. It looks like a chamaedorea elegans. Don't expect it to grow much maybe a couple inches in the summer due to the over crowding in the pot. Make sure to give it a bit a water- once a week. It can take lots of sun.

Excuse me pls., but why go to such a big pot? From a 3" to an 8" is a large jump. I'd go to the 6" first, you can pot it larger the following year. Probably best to assess that when you see how big the roots are once unpotted. Will this be growing indoors or out?

Thanks Matt, Karen S., 'dirtygardener'. There are differences of opinion on how big it will grow, but I'll start it out in a 6" pot & see how it goes. It is intended as an indoor plant in an apartment. But I have an enclosed balcony with full width picture windows, no drapes, facing West, so I get lots of daylight & afternoon\evening sun. That's where most of my plants are located.

There are about a dozen stalks in this plant. So is it one plant, or should I do some separation at some point in the future?

Separating it is totally up to you. Most keep it as a clump because it's so small it will take a VERY LONG time to get much height and be noticeable since these are seedlings. In ideal conditions they can grow 4-6 feet. You would have to have it for many years in order to reach that size. Keeping it in a small pot will decrease the size of the over all plant and root system. It will grow into a 6 inch pot within 2 months. Being indoors will slow things down too.
