Definitely not 'Complicata' - the buds, sepals, and foliage aren't right for that. If the foliage were a bit more glossy, I would have suggested R. virginiana plena. I suspect its a primitive hybrid between a native species (R. virginiana is a distinct possibility) and either another species, or something early/modern/shrubby.

I do not recognize this exact variety, but its resemblance to at least one American native species is very strong.

When I heard those folks were going to Elmwood I considered tagging along, but I had to get home.

It doesn't look like the picture of D'Orsay. The flowers aren't that shape or fullness. It's raining but later I will go out and look at thorns at or just below the leaf nodes. Are there other roses that have this?

It reminds me of Manetti.

The flowers do really look like Manetti. But isn't it a china hybrid hardy in zone 6? The D'Orsay also was listed as zone 6. We are zone 4. I read on pg 42 of a booklet by N.E Hansen titled Hardy Roses for North Dakota (very interesting booklet) that millions of Manetti rootstocks were imported from Italy for American greenhouse budding. Could my Sally Cole rose have come somehow from something that was crossed with Manetti or budded onto it? But again, Manetti isn't zone 4 hardy.

I have D'orsay and once had Manetti in Zone 4. They both do OK, though Manetti had much more dieback than D'orsay.

Thanks for that information about hardiness of Manetti. Here is a link to the publication by Hansen I referenced above. Page 42 mentions Manetti. the entire publication is very interesting. It mentions roses developed by Hansen like Tetonkaha, Tegala, Zika, Kitana, Koza, Minisa, Mrs. Mina Lindell, and others.he developed around 1927 for the Dakotas.

Pictures of the leaves on Help Me Find show leaflets that fold upwards like a V...my rose doesn't do that and also the surface has a duller surface. Flowers are similar but...I'm tending towards the Manetti...
