Dark fluffy-ish couch - too dated looking?

Love this couch. It's a very dark charcoal. It is the most comfortable couch I've ever sat on, but worried it's too old fashioned looking.

I would be lightening/brightening the couch with linen, teal, navy, and yellow colors throughout the room. Walls are a light cream, with the hope of going greige one day :)

no worries Ashley! And, I am commenting again as I sure hope others will chime in and offer suggestions on what else to use with it to "make it work" beautifully.

I hope so! Any opinions are helpful :)

Yes, I think it is dated but the sofa in that particular photo is the most updated look of that style I have seen. My suggestion is go for a sofa you love, even if it seems dated to most.

Thanks ilikefriday! I just don't want to regret the look it may create. It's a brand new home so I want it to look modern, but I don't like modern couches because they aren't super comfortable! I may head back to the furniture store to do one more look around. Worst case this couch could go in the man cave basement

I love the couch as it does look super comfy. Maybe get a few modernish chairs and that will update the look???

My concern is not that they're dated or not, but that depending on the actual room, they can overpower the room because they feel so massive.

what does your space look like? They're other super comfy sofa's out there that has a slimmer look yet not as heavy.

If you love the couch, keep it and modernize it with accent colors, pillows, side tables and lighting. It is the most modern I’ve seen in that style and looks comfy! Would need to see whole room though.

It doesn’t look that dated to me. Looks comfy!

Jeanne: I don't think chairs will fit. I was considering two sofas or one sofa and a loveseat.

Claire: I've attached a picture for reference; not my home but the model home (my house is being built). To me that couch looks really uncomfortable and just - blah.

Amy: Thanks! I've attached a picture of the room so that you experts you can see the space! It is seriously the most comfortable couch ever.

Since you don't already own the couch, I would definitely keep looking since you say you want a modern looking room. We've owned several extremely comfortable couches that don't look like that. I think the arms are the parts that contribute most to the outdated look of this particular one. Here are just a few that have similar looking style cushions, but with updated arms. Consider looking for down wrapped foam cushion construction. Best of luck in your search.

are you saying the sofa I posted is blah or the one in the model home? This one is in leather. Will this be in the family room or in the living room? Also I do not know the size of the room would you happen to have the dimensions or a copy of the floor plan?

Claire the couch will go in the family room. I believe it’s 17x16. I will try to find a floor plan online.

    Side note: very hip space!

The main thing about a couch is... is it comfortable? You love it, buy it.

Unless you are trying to impress certain specific others, or trying to flip your home with this as a centerpiece, this is a wonderful couch.

There’s no use in sugar coating this: Find something else...seriously. Since you asked if it looks dated, that’s obviously something that matters to you. You can try to lighten it up all you want with throws and pillows, but, at the end of the day, it’s still an ugly couch...not IG-worthy at all, which I’m guessing you’re in to...like most young people. You’d never see it in the pages of House Beautiful. You would, however, see it in a Rent-a-Center flyer that comes with the Sunday paper.

Hahaha Sammy. Jeeze Louise. It’s not an ugly couch by any means. Just super fluffy and possibly too fluffy for the room/floor plan. I couldn’t care less that the couch won’t be in some magazine hahah. Thanks for the comment though - next!

Thanks for the comment though - next!

That’s pretty rude, Ashley, and not the way to respond to someone who’s given you honest solicited feedback. You asked for opinions, and, in my opinion, it’s ugly.

are you one of the jenner cluster or ariana

Thanks for your opinion. I don’t think it’s ugly, just possibly a bit too fluffy for the space it’s going into. It’s one thing to be upfront, it’s another to be rude. I didn’t ask if it’d look good on Instagram or a home magazine.

So again, thanks for your opinion.

IMO, it's not old-fashioned nor is it modern. It's one of those couches that lures people to its cushions for movie marathons. If that's the kind of couch you want then it looks the part. If you think it's possibly too fluffy for the space it's going into, it is.

Thanks tartan. It's definitely a couch for binge watching! I like some of the couches that sujafr posted pictures of so I'm researching those as well.

I think you should keep looking too...

Since you asked, here, if it looked too dated, then that thought was already in your head :)

If you think a sofa looks blah, that's because there are no kids/dogs/drink stains/colorful pillows/throws...

Personally, I like a roll-arm sofa...I find them to be less formal and more cozy.

I do think it's dated looking, mainly because of the arms. I'd look at the Axis II sofa from Crate & Barrel or something similar. It's VERY comfy and works with many different styles. I'd definitely recommend a track arm sofa.

I really love the look of the couch, personally. If it’s comfortable and calls to you I’d go for it. I think the bold dark gray color saves it from looking entirely dated. The only thing I wonder is if you’re instinctively imagining it in your space and suggesting it would feel heavy up against that dark striped wall—will that also be in your home? The pic you posted with the striped wall looks very pulled together but also a bit “decorated” and cold IMO. I think a vintagey couch might give the room a more unique, “You” feel.

Hi Eve - Thanks! I'm so torn on it. I agree with other that it's the fluffy arms that age it a bit. My walls will be a solid light cream color (standard color that builders use). I'm not a huge fan of the stripes. I definitely don't want a room that looks cold. I like warm inviting spaces!

Thanks Lisa! I'll check out Crate & Barrel, though I'm sure that furniture will be a little out of my price range.

Is it a standard couch model, or a one off? If your house is still being built, could you wait a month, and see how you feel about it then?

It reminds me of a recliner with the puffy arms and rounded back cushions. There are so many comfy attractive couches out there I’d keep looking. Furniture is so expensive don’t buy something you’re already having doubts about.

Eve - yup, I can wait. I put a deposit down on the couch but I'm sure I can change my order since it hasn't been paid in full yet.

Kim - thanks. I plan to look in in the store again this weekend.

Just an FYI about the couches I posted above. They were all listed on wayfair.com, so unfortunately can't be sat in before buying (as far as I know). But there are many other options for styles other than the fluffy one you are leaning toward or the ultra modern you found uncomfortable. I was trying to be diplomatic above in my opinion of that couch and don't mean to be harsh now. Even though I'm not young, I've seen that style in a store and seriously wondered how anyone could buy them and why stores would still have something that old looking. If you said you loved that style, or if you own it and just can't replace it yet, then great. But since you already recognize it looks dated, why would you buy it? You don't have to settle for ugly (fluffy doesn't really describe it) to get comfortable.

What is your budget for a sofa? Do you only want leather? I'll try and give some suggestions on other options that fit your needs.

Lisa it’s not leather! I know it looks like leather but it’s a super soft material. I want to say micro suede but I’d have to look.

I thought you said it was leather in another post but it must have been someone else! What is your budget?

Nope I think someone else said that. I could never do leather. I’d stick to it hahaha. Around $1k

offhand, I would suggest looking also at Raymour and Flanagan and also Bob's. I know people tend to think Bob's is cheap, and some of it is, but I have seen some good pieces from there as well.

    Thanks so much Salonva!

Because you have asked — yes, I think it looks dated and is not very stylish. I am sure it is very comfortable and if comfort trumps everything else, then go for it.

We just bought the sectional version of this sofa. We chose a super soft
fabric and it’s the most comfy couch we have i love it. A little over
your price range but might be worth considering? Not sure what furniture
    stores you have near you?

Hi Kim - thanks! This sofa is from Ashley Furniture. I saw the sectional in store but I think it would close off my space too much, so we ordered the sofa/loveseat combo to maximize seating space.

It truly is the most comfortable couch!

I will look at the link you provided :) I like the lighter color!

The pics that sujafr posted, the charcoal sofa is from Ashley Furniture. We have the sectional version. By no means is it "high quality", but it is really comfortable and durable.

Thanks sue! The couches I want are from there too. I don't need anything fancy or expensive, just comfortable and nice looking.

Do you have any pictures of your sectional? I am worried about such a dark color but I think that's enough light in the room/floor to balance it out. My current furniture is a light beige (but won't fit in the new home).

My living room faces the East, so it doesn't get a ton of light and the couch isn't too dark at all. I'll take a picture when I get home. We don't buy fancy/expensive couches either. I did once and it didn't wear better than the cheap ones. We're a little rough on furniture, so we only expect to get a few years out it. By we, I really mean my husband, lol.

Sue, we’re in the same boat! Men and expensive couches don’t mix in our homes :)
