I would calm down a bit about this. Was anyone in the attic stirring up the vermiculite regularly? Probably never. Any settling that the vermiculite insulation did, was done when it was new. The fibers were blown out of the way of the vent fan a long, long time ago. I am guessing that you are not the owners who had the insulation blown in, from the way you are describing things. The vermiculite insulation was settled and in place and fibers only get airborne when someone steps on them, crushes them, stirs them up. I would tend to agree. A good idea to have it tested if you want, but I wouldn't go rushing to the doctor just yet. Asbestos increases your riskof lung disease but it doesn't mean anyone exposed will automatically get it. It's much more common in workers who were exposed to high levels frequently.

EPA is pretty cautious about its advice (I'm in the field although I don't work for EPA). If they're saying low disturbance equals low exposure, you can rely on it.

I'd wait till you see the test results first. And if it's positive, you can have your home air tested, but I bet it will come out OK.

Here's another take on it. Apparently it's rare to find over 1% asbestos in the stuff (which is the regulatory limit for 'asbestos containing'), but on the other hand, it's usually the most toxic type, amphibole. Interesting that WR Grace has established a fund for reimbursing part of the cost of replacement for homeowners.

Dont panic, until you have something to panic about. There is a chance of asbestos, yes, but, there is also a chance it is not. Not all the vermiculite in the 90's had asbestos. Unless you really need to go to the doctor for other things, I would hold off making that appointment, until you absolutely know for sure.

What did you finally end up doing? Did you chamge things around ? i believe my attic exhaust vents into the attic as well. the access opening to my attic is not in my house i have to go into my garage and get on a ladder and have to access it from there. i have never been up there. . Also, have noticed that vermiculite pieces dropped into my light fixture just below the exhaust fan. in the bathroom. i thought they were bugs for the longest time as the glass is frosted. My boyfriend cleaned it out and made it so no more could drop into the batbroom fixture. i am completely paniced and filled with anxiety .
