I don't know, but something similar almost flew into my face the other day, and it was HUGE! It looked like a bee, but was yellow and the size of a horsefly. Scared me half to death! I went running back into the house.

It's the moth of the "puss caterpillar". I saw strange things yesterday too. I had 2 robber flies in my yard. HUGE suckers scared the crap outta me when they flew in it sounded like a bee hive. Ugly, and about 2-3" long...gave me the creeps.

Thanks Barb, I believe you are right! They are pretty gross, I had to google "robber flies" since I wasn't familiar with those, man are they scary looking and gross Lol...I guess Florida is a great place for all these gross and scary, ugly bugs Lol...

I found out what my giant flying insect was. Seems it was a type of horsefly that is sort of golden and brown striped. I'm used to the black ones, so didn't recognize it as a horse fly. Look on this page and you'll see what he looked like and why I thought he was a bee. I hope it doesn't come back!
