There could be several reasons. Pears are not self-fertile so lack of a suitable partner for cross pollination is a possibility. So is a lack of insect pollinators when the tree flowers. And unseasonably cold weather as the buds are emerging can damage or abort flowering.

There are three apple trees very close to the two pear trees. As well as many varieties of flowers. I also let dandelions grow to attract bees.

Apple trees will not pollinate pear trees :-) Are both pear trees the same variety? Do you know what kind they are? At least in my area, dandelions are seldom blooming at the very early time fruit trees bloom, pears being one of the earliest species to flower. Often even bumble bees and honey bees are not yet active so you need to rely on the very early mason bees for pollination.

I would graft another variety onto the tree. Grafting pears is very easy if you have not done it

More background information needed. For instance are these known to be grafted clones of named orchard pear cultivars? Or might they be orchard pear seedlings that popped up on their own? Or perhaps even Callery pears, with their pellet-like fruits that you may not be recognizing as mature fruits, because you are looking for orchard pear fruit?

They are Bartlett pear trees from a long standing nursery. They were

app. 4’ tall when purchased and planted.

Bartlett wil require another European pear type to cross pollinate - Anjou, Bosc or Comice are suggested. Also pears produce very little nectar and so are not overly attractive to bees. It is recommended to have twice as many bees available to pollinate pears compared to other fruit trees.

Thanks. But now that I see you mentioned Anjou,.....there is a possibility that is what these are Been so long that maybe this senior wanted Bartlett at the time but had to settle for Anjou. Would that make a difference in what you said. Thanks from Eastern Canada.

Won't really make any difference as Anjou will require a different pollination partner to produce fruit as well.

Thanks. My wife aunt has one lonely pear tree that sits in the middle of a mowed field all by itself. It produces fruit every year like crazy. Would you be able to guess at what kind it may be. Guess I need a graft from it.

It could also be being fertilized with pollen from a tree not located in that garden. Mason bees can travel several hundred yards in their pollen hunt; honey and bumble bees several miles.

I believe that may not be true. However, apple trees might not be the best pollinator for pear trees.

I don't think there's been a lot of investigation or research into this subject.

While it might theoretically be true, practically it will not work. Pears are among the earliest fruit trees to flower whereas apples tend to flower several weeks to more than a month later. The bloom times must coincide. You might be able to slide by with a very late flowering pear and an early flowering apple but I would not put money on it!!

If it were quite so simple, fruit tree vendors or orchardists would be recommending them for pollination partners. And they do not.

My five year old Bartlett pear hasn't bloomed yet. I guess I've got 5 more to go....or more. I've also seen loners bear fruit. Will flowering pears pollinate a Bartlett?

I have a 5 and 1 pear tree but never blossoms out it is about 4 years old why?
