There are exactly zero built in appliances that come with free install. Costco only offers “free install“ for things that can be slid into place with no modifications, and then plugged in. Just like everyone else. Especially when you start talking hardwiring things and cabinet modifications. Only electricians and cabinet specialists should ever touch those. Never ever an “appliance installer”. Never.

Expect installation costs from $200-$700 depending on the degree of modifications needed. You need a General Contractor because of the several different trades involved.

We updated this kitchen to include new appliances. The old oven was 4" shorter than the new. The new also had to have a new 4 wire circuit run to it to work properly. We needed a cabinet maker, an electrician, and then the contractor himself, just for the oven portion of the project.

There is no way that a standard appliance installer who is used to plugging up a washing machine and putting the discharge hose in the standpipe should ever be trusted around something like a built in wall oven. That's a big disaster waiting to happen.

Thanks. I’ll be making more phone calls. We don’t currently have a contractor because a year after kitchen went through a major remodel the contractor moved away. From the comments thus far it seems I need to be make calls to find a replacement and a cabinet maker. The electrician has made sure the wires are correct and the right number and run properly.

You need the installation manual for the model you are purchasing. That will tell you how much you need to change. Also if the electrical box needs to be moved.

Costco installed my GE range & my GE fridge. As already said, it's basic install only but I was happy with both of mine. I did the prep work before (electrical, gas, squaring counter-top, etc).

Seconding the recommendation for the installation manuals. They should tell you exactly what you need. Unfortunately, if you are not very technical, they can be hard to read. If you don't trust yourself to interpret them correctly, it wouldn't hurt to have a contractor go through the manual with a fine toothed comb. In my experience, it's the small print that makes the big difference.

I 2nd Joseph. The appliance specs are OK for planning space, but never trust them to go by for cut out openings. They even say in the instructions, "for planning purposes only". You should only make alterations with the actual appliance on site & measure off of it directly.

I have always found appliances give very good measurements as to the opening for a wall oven for instance . IMO contact the cabinet maker to see if you can get a new front panel to the right size for the wall oven

I was just reading some more reviews of the oven at other sites and some buyers noted that the cut out dimensions provided by the manufacturer and in the installation manual were simply wrong.

"i did call Costco as well as GE. ( the oven manufacturer) . They say that if we use anyone but their GE installers to install our oven they won’t correct amy installation issues which later arise. So having the installers simply drop off the oven and leave is an issue.."

I haven't heard of an appliance company ever covering an INSTALLATION issue. Obviously if you pay ABC appliance to install your appliance and they do it wrong - GE won't fix that - it will have to go through ABC appliance. I know plenty of cabinet installer who install appliances. If they do it incorrectly they are responsible.

As far as fixing the cabinet - that is a finish carpenter all the way! No one else.

Oven sizes are always different so this is a pretty common thing.

"Our currrent wall oven is 48” high, according to the manufacturers spec sheet but the actual wall cutout needed was shorter because the oven lip accounted for several inches of the total height and the lip extended past the cutout opening. We are facing a similar situation here. The specs indicate the oven is 51 inches high."

Isn't the cutout always smaller than the outside of the oven? What's the cutout of your existing oven and cutout of the new oven?

Here’s an update:

based on feedback here, I sought out recommended specialists and was very fortunate that a contractor whose work I’ve seen and who an acquaintance hired for a lovely kitchen renovation was able to send over subcontractors to complete installation. There will be some more finish work on Monday. They said I could use the oven in the meantime.

The installers repeated the same things Joseph Corbett had noted: that it’s vital to do an installation on site rather than trust the manufacturers specifications provided online or even in the installation manuals.

Our double oven is the GE Cafe french door model.

HL you asked about the cutout of my existing oven and that of the new oven. The old cutout was 48 inches. I can’t provide the exact cutout height and width for our new oven but it was at least 2 inches longer (total height) . I basically let the pros do the final measuring and installation and stayed out of their way.

There will be some minor finish work on Monday....drywall repair and paint from damage left when our old oven, a complete piece of junk ( in spite of high Consumer Report ratings) was pulled in and out of the wall numerous times for attempted repairs. .

Costco sent a company to deliver and a separate company to install my dishwasher. When the deliverymen arrived, there were 4 of them, I looked at one and said "who are they?" and he said "they are the installers, we were able to schedule it at the same time" - "great". Well, the installers said they couldn't install it and left a pipe leaking in my kitchen, when they took the old dishwasher. I had to pay an extra $200 for an electrician to install a new outlet and someone to install the dishwasher. When I called the company who supposedly was sent to install the dishwasher - I found out they are only transporters. I will get to the bottom of this. Are they scamming Costco, are they scamming customers?

Save yourself the aggravation. You will regret it. Costco installers are horrible. My advice based on experience: Do not order appliances to be installed from Costco. They do use another company to install. The workmen clearly didn't know anything about appliances. They asked to use my husband's tools. I used to think of Costco as a quality company (now I think of them like a has been). Twice they came out to install my microwave, each time they said there were problems (stripped screw and banged up microwave). This is the exact same microwave that was already in there, so it's not like they are making adjustments. Each time I had to wait on hold for over an hour to reschedule the new appointment while listening to the same music play over and over (a single tune). Costco never ever followed up after they messed up the two installs. So, terrible service, zero follow up, what a disaster. Still no microwave...Never again.

Costco has good customer service for items that you buy from them. But I honestly don't expect much with regards to other services (e.g. installation).

In other words, if you buy an item that you can install yourself and that you'll take back to the warehouse in case of problems, Costco is very much the answer. On the other hand, if you need local service then you should look for one of the few remaining reputable independent appliance dealers. Unfortunately, they get harder and harder to find. But they'll have your back if you need after sales on-site service.

I found the aforementioned posts quite valuable, as pertains to installation of new wall ovens in existing cabinetry. You've saved many people the stress of having a botched job, relying on company spec sheets for cabinet alterations, prior to having the appliances on site. I further appreciated the comment re: actual alteration cost, given how little some double wall oven brands are offering toward their "guaranteed to fit" statements.
