I would arrange the rocks so that the “lines” on the rock faces all run in the same direction. Start with the biggest rock on the left and then reposition the others so that the lines run horizontally. You want it to look like one giant rock pushed up out of the ground and then some parts of it wore away.

As with an iceberg, landscape boulders or large rocks in planting beds should have 1/3 to 1/2 of their mass underground. Otherwise they look like someone just dumped a load of rocky rubble in the middle of the bed.

Since your rocks are not very large - really rather undersized for that use - I'd focus on clustering them rather than spreading them out.

Any better? I have many more that are flat. I think that I need a big one on the lower right as the slope goes up from R to L. I see what you mean about it should look like one big rock coming through the soil and can do that once I add the dirt. Should I wait to fall to add plants once I have it right? Thanks, Al

It looks a bit like a computer arranged it. I think you need a cluster but then pull a couple of them slight away from the cluster as nature might land them. They are still small. Any larger available? Consider cementing some together with mortar in order to make boulder.

Why do you think you need to bring in soil?

That soil is like concrete. Nothing has been planted there in years.

No rock in a rock garden should be placed upright like a tombstone. All the rocks should have their "grain" running the same direction. Bigger rocks should be at the back. This just looks like someone dumped the rocks out the back of a truck. Also, the rocks should be partially buried.

How is it going? Have you put in any plants now that it's September? I think it takes a real inner "eye" to see what it will look like with plants before there are plants and there's always the chance to change it. I like rock gardens where I can see the rocks. I know some people make rock gardens and then cover up the rocks with plants which I never understood. Yours will look beautiful as things grow and bloom.

I have finished placing them and just waiting for plants soon and will post a pic. I’m in London looking at gardens for help. There are no rules “set in stone” on what one should do that’s for sure. I’ll put up some pics within a month.
