Getting better - a vast improvement over red mulch. I agree that some height would be a good addition. Maybe a tree with a maximum growth habit of 15-20 feet tall and wide?

The idea of a shade tree might be good , I just don't know where to position it. Looking at the picture the sun would set on the right hand side of the picture and the garden gets sun from @ 10am till the sun sets. Maybe a suggetstion on the proper position and type of tree (s) without looking misprpoprtunate.

Nice, are you going to trim the Skokebush into a tree shape?

As it gets bigger I would try to shape it unless there is a certian way to do it to grow it into a tree. But again I would be afraid of having one "big" tree in the middle of otherwise somewhat of a proportionate garden

Smokebush becomes tree size eventually. Another beautiful tree you could plant in your zone would be chaste tree. It has pretty blue flowers in late spring. Or perhaps sweet bay magnolia with a nice scent and maybe goes more with your color scheme, although when the chaste tree is not in bloom it wouldn't matter much. It has a lovely form, but then so does sweetbay mag. Both trees are small and slow growing.

What a beauty! How much I love to see how people still care for the green spaces around the church. Compared to 2006, now the garden certainly looks much greener and more complete. If you ask for advice, I would say that a few more colorful flowers can be planted to give it even more color. Otherwise, it's like a corner of heaven, where people can stop on their way and pray, relax, meditate. It reminds me of a small garden in front of an apostolic church in the village where I was born and saw daily.
