AC unit freezes within 25 mins

One year ago we bought a townhouse in NJ. The first weekend we were there the AC broke. An HVAC company concluded that the fan in the unit was broken and we needed a new unit. We replaced it with a Goodman and thought our problems were over. But ever since then the unit freezes within 25 mins of being on and no air comes out of the vents. We switched HVAC companies and they still can't figure out what's wrong. They have replaced Freon, enlarged the ducts, and checked pressures. They see the ice forming within 25 mins of the AC being on, but can't figure out why.

After MUCH yelling and screaming, they are coming tomorrow to perform a "manual leak test" which is supposed to take 4-5 hours. I'm about to lose my mind with this problem and this company. What could be causing ice within 25 mins??? No air flow through the vents? Please help!

We checked all air filters. They’re perfectly clean.

Thank you! I do believe we needed a new fan last summer, but I don't think it was installed or connected properly and a series of band-aids have been done in the last year. What would get replaced in the above situations you mention?

Was the condenser (outside unit) or furnace replaced? In your post you just say "it needed a new fan" and there are fans in both units.

There are multiple reasons an AC will freeze. The company you choose ultimately has to know what those reasons are to be able to fix it.

Most HVAC companies have a licensed contractor that sits behind a desk. This person rarely runs or does any service work. In some remote cases this person may have never done any real amount of service work. He may have had *help* to get the license he got.

Then to keep overhead costs low, this person hires people with little to no real experience... it's a recipe to disaster when high skilled problems develop.

If you're not confident in this company, it's probably not going to get any better.

If you live in or near Mercer county I can recommend a competent HVAC company that should be able to diagnose and fix your problem.

Did the current company add refrigerant on prior service visits without determining the source of the leak?

The condenser I fairly new (we didn’t replace it upon buying the home, but it’s on the newer side). We replaced the furnace. And yes, Freon was added last summer and again Sunday without determining if a leak was present.

sounds like a typical gas n go...they should be outlawed...

It's been determined for you. An AC system doesn't use up refrigerant. If you have to keep recharging it, there is a leak somewhere. Most of the time the fix will require replacement of a major component at least.

Sometimes you may get lucky and the leak repair doesn't require a major component change, but these can still be costly in some cases.

If you don't hire someone 'known' to be skilled in this area... the proposed fix will probably not last that long. (maybe a season or two)
