I stepped out and watered the rootballs..slammed together and all tied up this hosta "hedge" is still 5 feet long..the backs of the leaves read blue..the upright elongated slightly wavy leaves make me think Krossa Regals..just as I thought before I actually saw them..

ken..we think alike!..going home we passed a Texas Roadhouse..I said "if we weren't so disgusting we should stop and get you a big steak"..I need to make that happen..he deserves it!!..we don't have a dog but I love dogs..the tiny dog giant bone pic is hilarious..this reminds me of something I forgot to mention..as we were 20 mins or so into digging the wife opens a patio door and 2 French Bulldogs come running out..they ran right up to us..barking in our faces as we're working bent over on a slope..running around our feet..she came after them but for a moment my husband looked ready to quit..

i would like to blame the dogs.. but she was an idiot ...

Kathy..it was a saga lol..I wouldn't even consider asking hubby to "come with me and dig free plants" for at least a year haha..he's asleep in the recliner right now..I hope he's willing to help me plant when he wakes up..I need to figure out where they go QUICK..at least our ground is smooth not lumpy..our soil isn't rock hard..we have shade and no dog helpers..much better working conditions than yesterday..

ken..you nailed it..they were far from trained..fortunately the dogs were small..we're both tall and not afraid of dogs but it WAS aggravating..I'll take dog treats on my next dig..but hey I got free hostas!..hubby will be thrilled to know there's no need to plant today..just throw them on the driveway..lol

NW, I know they're a ton of work, but such a great find! Don't be afraid to plant them in some tough situations. I love all my 'Regal Splendors' for that reason, they'll grow anywhere! I'm sure Krossa Regals will too. Happy sweating!

That are some large clumps. I did relocate one large clump last year and it was a lot of work. Will make instant garden effect with such size. Congrats!

StevePA..I've been happy with my Krossa Regals and my one Regal Splendor..to me they have such an elegant look..

djacob..I'm probably in the same boat as you now!..this could very well be my husband's final hosta rescue lol..he DID help me plant 2 clumps today..it was too dark when we finished to get pics..

lindalana..moving large clumps is hard work..but when you finish..stand back and take a look..it makes you smile..

one of our 5 clumps was a butchered section the first person left..her teenage son dug out the amount she wanted and left a mangled piece..I figured I could save it and I know the homeowner didn't want it so we brought it home..the butchered one had so many bent stems they caused the good stems to lean..so I decided to remove the bent/broken ones..it looks much thinner than the one across from it but from inside the house the thinner one is hidden behind a tree..the other one (which we dug out) looks great..3 clumps to go..all of the clumps were watered 2 times today..

And from now on when you are walking around your yard, taking us on a tour of your beautiful wooded lot and point out these hosta we will all remember how they came to live at your house and smile... and chuckle a bit thinking all your effort about what a gem of a husband you have :)

I think my husband would have come to help me dig out some free hosta. But I could just hear him say "do you really need all these hosta? Where are you going to put them?" And the answer would be, of course, "yes I need all these hosta" and "I don't know where I will put them, but I will figure it out!" LOL

Went to a nearby garden centre yesterday. The Krossa Regal hosta were selling for $17.99 for one large eye! So you hit the jackpot with all of your free new hosta!

the carnage..couldn't help myself..the butchered one on the left had so much damage..the story on my concrete pots..one concrete pot was free..I inherited it at my last house..I bought the second one (because I had one like it already) at an estate sale in my neighborhood for $1..so these hosta and a pair of concrete pots cost me $1..took this outside from a spot that mimics what I see from my kitchen window..we purposely put the pot on the left over enough not to be blocked by the tree..then matched the distance on the right..the pots should be cute when they're planted..see the 2 KRs near the bottom of the pic?..now I have 2 pairs flanking the path..I have a few stems to snip on each one..it was dark and time to go in..FYI..we have a path full of leaf litter (I put it there) behind our mixed hedge..that Royal Standard is mine..I put a log there to mark the boundary..

There's always room for Jello….and more hostas. Congrats on the haul and the heavy lifting!

Sherry..thanks!..I could never repeat what we've done..we're too slow now..too old now..I have a bit more room to plant but not nearly as much as what I've already planted thank goodness..I just couldn't pass up those hostas..my roomy space has allowed me to have no self control lol..

newhostalady..we definitely have the same pots!..AND similar husbands Lol!!..we're blessed to have helpful husbands..sometimes I think he helps because he can't handle how long it would take me on my own to finish..he's so much faster and stronger..we had a meeting today about our roof..2 people from a roofing company and one inspector from our insurance company..several neighbors (10?12?) recently replaced their roofs due to hail damage..our insurance company agreed to replace our roof..we have signs of hail damage..so no planting today but we looked around for possible planting locations..we did water the 3 unplanted clumps..

well we slept in..then had a nice breakfast..we're on a very leisurely pace today but soon it's time to get serious and plant the new hostas..hubby deserved a "day off" and had one yesterday..he's such a gem..

the roof replacements started last fall..my husband gets on our roof in the fall to blow off leaves..he didn't see anything alarming..then when the spring rains finally stopped more new roofs were installed..so we called the best roofing company for an inspection..he showed us pics..told us he'd sent an email with a complete report and to contact our ins company..we did and now we're getting a new roof!..I just hate the mess and stress of workers at the house..at our meeting we told them we're not in a hurry..earliest it could be done is 3 weeks away..I'd like to wait until September..the ins man said we have up to a year so no problem to wait a little..

it WAS difficult for me to ignore the free hosta ad when I saw it..the second day I couldn't resist..the first person was a woman and her teenage son..I bet she realized she couldn't handle the removal and the planting and passed them up..without hubby I probably would've given up too..they were so big and heavy..I'm excited to see them next year..undamaged fresh and beautiful..

I would go out and buy a loto ticket if I were you free beautiful plants , new roof and an expensive $1 pot. If your husband is like mine he says never again but he does forget and does some heavy digging and takes me to get a good bargain buy and sell item and lifts them into the truck or car too, We are very fortunate lol

almosthooked..a lotto ticket Lol..but I agree..I've had some good things happen lately..yesterday my neighbor gave me a short hose (25 ft?) which will be useful in the front..we had just one really long (100 ft?) hose and were getting by just fine..but it's a hassle to drag..the one she gave me is so easy..and it was free!..our gardens wouldn't be the same without our guys..

yay!!..the 5 free clumps are planted..1 in front 4 in back..this one in front appears low because the compost on it hasn't settled..I love the 4 in back..the concrete pots and hosta look so much nicer than just the ground cover..I think the pathetic clump is planted too high :-( ..at least it would be the easiest one to redo..but NOT today..we're tired of messing with these..there's some crossed stems to untangle..some bent stems to clip..maybe add more compost..the concrete pot on the left needs to be leveled..both need to be planted..but the worst is over..the clumps are "out of the woods" lol and have a new home.

Looking good. They especially look nice framing a walkway or really anything.

If you need positive feedback I’ve got some. You have done a great job! Rescued homeless hostas, had another positive interaction with DH, generated and put some sophisticated landscape ideas into reality, (DH will forget the bad part within a few years), and all within five days for a dollar! And documented the whole thing for the world to know. They will look spectacular for years and years, congratulations!

aww thanks Kathy!..I love your positive feedback!..this project was tougher than it looks..I love that I can see the 4 in back from my kitchen window..they'll certainly bring up memories whenever I see them..we were so happy to relax a little today..I was out watering..wandering..weeding a little..but DH took a day off from garden work..napping..TV..computer..he earned it!

56steps..I agree..the location is great!..I have curtains just on the lower half of my kitchen window..when they're open I have a great view of those tall hostas..even now with missing stems they're impressive..thanks for the compliment!..

peren..thanks!..I love them already..I was admiring them this morning while I was making coffee lol..DH is my perfect helper..he thinks I'm too slow (I am) but he tolerates it..I'm a thinker he's a worker..and in the end we do a good job..
