Thanks! I remembered that you had Rosigold and thought you had Nam Dok Mai way back when - 2013 maybe? Good to know about the different way to ripen. Does Mallika store fairly well since it does not ripen on tree? Is it less likely to get squirrel damage?

I live here for about 12 years and yes I had all the above varieties, don't remember what year.

And yes that is the plus of the Mallika. picked green and no animal or disease damage, mine are in perfect shape and very photogenic for sending to my brothers.:)

I have a night visitor and one night I turned the lights outside and saw a mama possum eating the mangoes, she is very good and only eat a mango or two , few figs sometimes...

On the other hand squirrels are very wasteful and take small bites everywhere and then leave the fruit, I just don't like that.

I have Glenn ( which I really love the flavor of) I picked the last of them last week due to the squirrel eating them. I picked it mature green and let it ripen in my pantry. I have 2 Cogshall they are also quite good and pretty large, they are just a week or so later than the Glenns, I have Maha Chanook which has a very different shape, almost like a long elongated kidney shape. they are still mostly green right now, I fighting the squirrels, they are eating all my mangoes when they are still green! I've not had a single mango ripen on the tree this year!! Last variety is my Keitt...only had a handful this year, they are a very late variety...ripening in August and could go as late as September here in my backyard, Central FL.

Honorable mentions are Pickering and Kents...I've had tasted Kents they are an excellent mango, but I didn't plant one since they are a very large tree and I wanted to stay in the semi dwarf family. I also had another excellent and very prolific variety called Pickering. I used to have this variety but sadly I planted it to close to the house and 2 years later my husband decided to build a screened in porch and the tree was right in the part of where the patio was going to be :o(...the tree was already too big to move so we had to cut it down :o(

The only mango I've tasted and didn't like is Carrie, I am however an exception, as I have read many post that love this variety...the ones I've had had an after taste I did not care for, herbal, mediciny taste. This one is suppose to be picky of when you pick them, they say if you pick it too late like letting it ripen on the tree... that is when you can get that offensive ( to me) taste. Again taste is subjective so keep that in mind. Some have even mentioned a hint of flavor

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents worth of info, since this is a very interesting topic,...mainly due to my love of mango's,..have been growing the trees for 21 years now,..started in the Upper keys ( Islamorada ), and wound up here in Englewood planting various types since 2004. Wherever I live I have had a minimum of 2 mango trees in my backyard.

Have tried at least 10 different varieties, won't go into the ones I didn't care for, just the 3 that I've fallen in love with and rate them at the top.

No 1 is Kent, a large red mango that ripens in late July where i am now ( zone 10a in SW Fla ) The taste is fantastic IMHO ! My tree now is only in the ground one year, still has 7 red beauties still hanging on,..none have fallen into the grass yet ! Eventually this will be a huge tree, topping out anywhere from 45' to 55 ',..so the experts tell me. The fruit flies, which have attacked this tree mostly, have not shown up this year, but i still hung 2 apple-cider-vinegar jugs just to be safe,..trapped less than 20 it looks like.

No 2 and No 3 are tied for second,..both fantastic producers, my Glenn is now in the ground for 10 yrs and is about 22- 24 FT tall and won't go much higher,..maybe 27 ' max. The last yellow/red fruit dropped 2 days ago, and I beat the critters to it because I was out there at 06:15 AM. i think the critters here are a bit lazy this yr for some reason ! :o) It only had about 150 fruits this yr, - that's because I gave it a heavy pruning last Sept. The year before, that tree had easily 250 + mango's.

My last favorite tree, tied for # 2, is the Valencia Pride. easily the fastest growing tree of any I have planted. And it'll be the largest tree of all,..topping out around 60 ',..so I've been told ! The fruits are humongous,..and delicious,..again IMHO ! It ripens the latest, usually late Aug /early Sept. Had to cut mine down this year, but don't want to put a sad tone to this post. Getting older, not younger,...2 huge fruit trees will keep me on my toes for 6 months,..all the exercise I want now ! My friends and neighbors here call me " Mango Man " !The fruits I didn't give away are in my free standing freezer which is full to the top with frozen mango slices that will last me ( I only put 'em on my cereal in AM ) thru January !

Well this last post makes my heart sing. I am now the proud parent of a Glenn mango pup. :-) I'd still like to get a Pickering or possibly Rosigold or Lanciettia.

Trying for longer time with mangoes on the table. :-) So for now I'll hang onto this pup and give it all the love an attention it can handle until I can find one of the other 3 varieties to give it some company.

Now I'll try to stop bugging everyone about their mango trees.
